Since I left you interviews Teeth of the Sea

It reads:

Teeth of the Sea’s Sam Barton is the type of guy who would just as gladly talk about music he’s been listening to as much as his own. For someone part of an industrial noise band that writes collectively, this isn’t surprising. Each member brings his or her own taste to the table but gladly balances off of the others. Barton, who runs a jazz shop in London, plays the trumpet and contributes his experimental jazz leanings, while drummer Mat Colegate and programmer Mike Bourne share their Prurient admiration.

It all came together on Highly Deadly Black Tarantula, the band’s latest and best album, released last November on Rocket Recordings. Teeth of the Sea fit nicely on the label, home to Gnod, Hey Colossus, and (sometimes) Shit and Shine. More importantly, they fit within the realm of great experimental musicians who define themselves not by their sound but by their accessible approach, ones open to change both internal and external.

I spoke with Barton over Skype late last year about Highly Deadly Black Tarantula. Half of our conversation consisted of talking about the music we liked in 2015 and Barton sharing funny stories from Teeth of the Sea’s 10-year existence. The other half was about the band’s live set up, creative approach, and influences. Read the transcript below, edited for length and clarity.

Since I Left You: What’s your live set up exactly like?

Sam Barton: We keep accruing and more and more stuff without streamlining it down. There’s four of us. I play the trumpet and the bass. A lot of looping stuff with the brass. I’ve got these two huge pedal boards–one for the bass, one for the trumpet. Jimmy [Martin] plays guitar and the Juno synthesizer and does stuff with cassettes. We recently discovered that we’ve got more

Well, here’s the follow up, which they describe as; ‘Temple Ov BBV is a collaborative work and a performative gesture between RMFTM and GNOD. Hills Interview with Plenirockium

Plenirockium has done one of the biggest interviews with the elusive Hills:

HILLS
FREAK'N'ROLL FOR THE (INNER) PEACE
Alexander Priarone and Giampiero Phlebas

It 's really a pleasure to keep our promise to interview Hills not only because "Frid" was the album of 2015 of Plenirockium or to reaffirm the validity of the Swedish underground scene but to learn more about their musical research without borders, including size multicultural and electric atmospheres roar of new forms of ethno-cosmic psychedelic, drone music, space rock, trance noise. After a long chase we were able to strike up a conversation via the web, make yourself comfortable ...

Hills - Hello, Hills is a band from Gothenburg, we are currently 5:
Tore - vocals, organ
Skin - vocals, guitar
Bob - down
Kalle - vocals, guitar
Hanna - vocals, drums

There were constant lineup changes over time, we did it deliberately inviting friends to play together even live. One way to make music and improvise more lively and fun.

How is the music scene in Gothenburg, there is turmoil?

Hills - Unfortunately we are not very updated. There are several groups here also among the best that we know how: Yuri Gagarin (conscious of their new LP Kommun 2), Strändernas Svall, Uran, Ill Wicker. There are also Kif whose single causes furor when it comes out. And probably many other groups who do not know....

Oneida – Positions in Vinyl Factory's 10 releases of the week

This is what they say:

Oneida
Positions
(Rocket Recordings)
Previously a Rocket mail order only item but now all get the chance to get our hands on this essential release from Brooklyn’s legendary Oneida. Here the trio get to grips with two bands that have surely shaped them from the beginning – This Heat and Chrome – and turn out two incredible versions that only they could do. On both tunes the atmosphere is menacing and the rhythms are huge as they pull apart the originals and slowly piece them back together. Stunning.

Excited to announce that GNOD have announced a new album called MIRROR to be released on 1st April.

Watch the teaser trailer above created by Rocket's Johnny O

You can also listen to lead track MIRROR in full over at the Quietus: The Quietus

The album is released on ltd white/standard black vinyl and CD on 1st April, preorder your copy here: Rocket Bandcamp

The press release reads:

Gnod – Mirror
(Launch091)

As 2016 dawns , it’s a fool who predicts the next move of Gnod, seemingly less a musical collec-tive and more a psychic force fuelled by maverick spirit and fearsome willpower.

Their mind-frying 2015 triple-album ‘Infinity Machines’ stood proud as a towering work of experi-mental expansion, acidic invective and nihilistic abrasion.Yet as an outfit whose restlessly uncom-promising nature is matched only by their unflinching anti-establishment drive, Gnod set about cre-ating a diametrically opposed aesthetic.

Just as dramatically as their restless disposition morphed their sound to a binary-driven direction for their last work, now Gnod were to strip their electronic setup to a vicious, viscous attack, as redolent of the primal punishment of early Swans as the angular clangour of prime Public Image Ltd, yet shot through with a mercurial power and fiery intensity that could come from no-one else. The opening title-cut of ‘Mirror’ seethes with lithe energy and dubbed-out vitality, whilst elsewhere the eighteen-minute closing track ‘Sodom & Gomorrah’ may be the most dystopian piece of music the band have yet created; a harrowing yet fiercely compelling colossus of bleak abjection.

“The tracks were pretty much written on the road in May 2015” elaborates Gnod’s Paddy Shine. “The final versions of the tracks on the album are a reaction to the results of the re-cent UK election and also some shit that was happening to us and our friends during that period. Lyrically it deals with mental health issues and how things like social media are a vehicle for our split personalities and egos - that and being under the thumb of forces and power structures we can't really fully understand, or even if we understand them we feel helpless to change the situation. This album won't change the situation or start any revolu-tions but it felt good for us to write some music to let the rage out"

Reflecting and refracting the uncertainty of a darkening era, ‘Mirror’ is a work of bold rein-vention and raw renewal, sculpting chaos and discord into a formidable statement of in-tent. Only one thing is certain - wherever Gnod choose to go next, their ire and inspiration blaze as brightly as ever.

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation announce the single release of Sunday Afternoon

If you listen to BBC 6 Music you would of already heard that Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation are releasing Sunday Afternoon, a track taken from their debut album Horse Dance as a single.

The digital single is being released on 4 March and features an unreleased track called Lucid Sapphire as the bside.

You can preorder it from here: iTunes

---

The press release reads:

JOSEFIN ÖHRN+ THE LIBERATION
SUNNY AFTERNOON
(LAUNCH091)

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation is a Swedish band, fronted by Josefin Öhrn alongside Fredrik Joelson who heads up a collection of musicians called The Liberation.

In the last twelve months, the band have experienced a dramatic rise to prominence with their debut album Horse Dance and single Take me Beyond that received heavy rotation on BBC 6 Music daytime airwaves. Now Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation return with the track Sunny Afternoon the
second single taken from the album.

Sunny Afternoon takes a tribal ‘Can meets Adam and the Ants’ like beat, fuzz bass, heavy synths and piano to create a gothy, psych pop groove that calls to mind late 70s ‘Siouxsie and the Banshees’ mixed with 90s space rockers ‘Laika’.

The B side is an unreleased track called Lucid Sapphire. The track is centred around an urgent and repetitive fuzz punk riff that is underpinned with a motorik beat and screaming synths. Josefin’s whispered vocal and harmonies adds an ethereal quality that creates a tension with the music.

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation have several prominent European Festivals confirmed in 2016 plus a full European tour is to be announced soon. The band have also just finished recording new material that will be released in the summer.

So 2016 looks to be another good year for Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation.

Listen to Sunny Afternoon here:
