Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation create a sonic kaleidoscope of dreamy altered state psychedelia with an hypnotic motorik drive.

The bands ever-expanding sound has a pop aesthetic bubbling under its surface and befitting their Nordic roots, but one that’s elevated skyward with a prismatic experimentation of kraurock-tinged repetition, dub echo and analogue curlicues. It’s a sound as biting as it is beatific, recalling in parts the work of Broadcast, Electrelane, Laika, Cat’s Eyes, The Creatures, Portishead and United States of America.

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation is a Swedish band, fronted by Josefin Öhrn alongside Fredrik Joelson who heads up a collection of musicians called The Liberation. In the last twelve months, they have experienced a dramatic rise to prominence with their debut EP Diamond Waves leading to shows in their homeland with Goat and Les Big Byrd, a nomination for Best Newcomer at the Swedish Grammy and rapturously received appearances at festivals like Roskilde.

On 6th November, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation release their debut album Horse Dance. which you can preorder here: Rocket Bandcamp

Soundblab give Highly Deadly Black Tarantula by Teeth Of The Sea 9/10

Highly Deadly Black Tarantula
Teeth Of The Sea

Release date: 2015-11-06

TotS’ 2014’s re-imagined accompaniment to gratuitous Civil War ‘shroom fest A Field in England seemed a perfectly logical progression for their tense and dramatic instrumentation following a succession of maturing studio albums. Indeed, it would be very tempting to pigeon-hole this latest masterful release as another wannabe soundtrack, but mark my words this is beyond cinematic. It’s another dark realm entirely.

'All My Venom' kicks off with some characteristic mariachi strains but, a few Morricone phrasings aside, this is disturbingly relentless and menacing, almost vicious fare complete with monstrously demonic noises which combine to form something that is both hideous and compelling. Ever wondered what “Fanfare For The Common Man” would sound like for the cyber age shot through with a hundred and eighty industrial beats to the minute? Meet “Animal Manservant”. Godflesh don’t do prog or techno, but if they did both, this is how it would probably sound...

The Five W's of Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation

WHO are they?
Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation is a Swedish band, fronted by Josefin Öhrn alongside Fredrik Joelson who heads up a collection of musicians called The Liberation. In the last twelve months, they have experienced a dramatic rise to prominence with their debut EP Diamond Waves leading to shows in their homeland with Goat and Les Big Byrd, a nomination for Best Newcomer at the Swedish Grammy and rapturously received appearances at festivals like Roskilde. Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation release their debut album Horse Dance on 6 November via Rocket Recordings.

Fredrik (guitars, vocals) is from 90’s NYC underground band Mouth, he’s done electronic music under the name Binger The Voyager and worked with artists such as Stina Nordenstam, Armand Mirpour. Calle Olsson (synthesizers) is from the krautrock band Paper. Victor Hvidfeldt (bass, guitar and vocals) has played with several artists and collaborations such as Sibille Attar, A nighthawk. Christoffer Cantillo (drums) has played with artists such as Anna von Hausswolff, Nils Berg Cinemascope, Musette.

Josefin (vocals, guitar, synths) talks us through the formation of the band. “When I got back to Stockholm from Paris, I went to art school and worked extra in a record store. I started to experiment more and more with sound and writing lyrics. So I recorded a demo and the owner of the store heard it. He was the former drummer of 90’s NYC underground band Mouth and he thought I should meet Fredrik Joelson. He was the front-man of Mouth. So we hooked up and started to make music together. This was 2011. And along the way we met these amazing musicians.”...

Somewhere between Kenneth Anger’s Lucifer Rising and The Wickerman is this nocturnal hinterland of midnight orgies, psychonauts and burning effigies. An ayahuasca ritual rolled into nineteen minutes, Capra Informis (Latin for ‘shapeless goat’) is the new off-shoot by Goat’s anonymous djembi player.

Chromaticism reviews Capra Informis – Womb of the Wild EP

‘Womb of the Wild’ is the first release by Capra Informis, a new band put together by the unnamed djembe player from Goat.”

An enigma wrapped in a mystery then…

I love the whole anti-celebrity air of mystique that shrouds the Goat collective, proof positive that you do not have to sell your soul to the devil in order to achieve success, real success on their own terms – or perhaps that was an integral part of the Vodun compact, invoked with Bondye?

Capra Informis or Shapeless Goat, bodes well, as the collective expands our consciousness, so too in many guises can they expand their esoteric dominion...

Capra Informis – 'Womb of the Wild' EP out today

We are pleased to announce 'Womb of the Wild' the first release by Capra Informis, a new band put together by the unnamed djembi player from Goat.

The ltd vinyl EP can be bought ONLY from here

Capra Informis – Womb of the Wild EP

Literally translated from the Latin, the name Capra Informis means ‘Shapeless Goat’, a curious turn of phrase given that this project is the work of the nameless djembi player from the Swedish psychedelic warriors monikered with the latter of the two words. Nonetheless, somewhere amidst the hinterland between shape and void, dream and waking, it would appear that some form of transformative process has indeed occurred over the course of the nineteen minutes of their debut EP on Rocket Recordings. Casting a heady and intoxicating spell of nocturnal atmosphere and drone-based abandon, these four tracks set out a shamanic mission both fresh and feral.

Whilst Capra Informis may share some stylistic touches with their main protagonist’s regular band, they also boast a markedly darker approach - the mesmerising percussive onslaught may be present and correct, yet the psychic landscapes and deviant monomania of these four raven-hued trips renders them imposing in their Dionysian debauchery. Moreover, while the one-chord guitar-driven inferno of ‘Womb Of The Wild’ finds kindred spirits in the nihilistic, spiritually-driven like of Dead Skeletons and early Skullflower, ‘Cold and high’ sees glacial synths and garage-birthed organ take the lead on a cinematic twilight voyage not unlike a Kenneth Anger filmscore’s depiction of an ayahuasca ritual.

Throughout, however, the potency and persuasive powers of Capra Informis’ approach cannot be called into question - within these whispered incantations and mantric arrangements lurk dark forces and strange undertakings untold. Yet it remains a rare pleasure to bear witness to this rich collision of fiery intent and fearless third-eye vision. Far from the shadow of their ringleader’s past work. Capra Informis are staking their claim as chimerical warriors with manifold powers, and this four-track sermon marks only the first of their forays into the unknown that promise rich rewards for the far-gone and the intrepid alike.

Echoes and Dust reviews Hey Colossus album launch

Live: Hey Colossus, Lower Slaughter and Kogumaza – Electrowerkz, London. October 9th, 2015.

With new album Radio Static High (their second this year, after February’s In Black and Gold) getting a rapturous reception from fans and critics alike, there’s no time better for Hey Colossus to be back on stage in the capital.

The reception afforded to Hey Colossus when they finally take to the stage is better described as a smattering of enthusiastic, but very much polite, applause than as hero’s welcome. Then again, this is partly because of the sextet’s unassuming entrance. A few thumbs go up. The sounds of Teeth of the Sea’s DJ set fade away and all of a sudden things kick off. Note the choice of words. You may think you’ve heard Hey Colossus on record, but it’s only upon turning up to see them in the flesh that you really get the full experience. Everything amplified. Everything louder than everything else. Everything played with a mix of reckless abandon and powerful confidence.
Everything fucking awesome.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given that Radio Static High has only just been released, it’s tunes from In Black and Gold – and the tasty pair of ‘Hot Grave’ and ‘Oktave Dokkter’ from Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo – that get the most enthusiastic physical reception from the crowd. The killer opening riff to ‘Hey, Dead Eyes, Up!’ gets a few fists in the air and, more amusingly, some bizarre air guitar efforts from one particularly enthusiastic punter, whilst ‘Hot Grave’ feels like it might turn the room upside down at any given moment (as it always does).

None of this is to suggest that newer tunes get a lesser welcome. The title track and ‘Hop the Railings’, in particular, are greeted like the hypnotic behemoths that they are. Meanwhile, ‘March of the Headaches’ and ‘Numbed Out’ show all the signs of becoming future live favourites. The former’s colossal brain-crushing riffs might just be the highlight of the entire evening.

When Hey Colossus next come back to London (and we can only hope that it’s not too long) then tracks like these will have become firmly embedded in the group’s live arsenal. Given the formidable performance they have already unleashed by the time ‘Black and Gold’ arrives to sledgehammer us all to sleep – seemingly unplanned encore aside – that promises to be an affair that surpasses even this.

Are Hey Colossus the best live guitar band in Britain right now? You’d be brave to argue otherwise. Don’t miss them next time.

Line of the Best fit interviews Hey Colossus

Hey Colossus rack up the albums – and tension

Watch out. Lightning has just struck twice for British psych-rock veterans Hey Colossus, a band who’ve knock out two outstanding albums in less than eight months.

To celebrate, the six-strong noise unit rolls up to the Electrowerkz bar and makes it a double. Because Friday night (October 9) is all about raising a glass to their second long-player of the year, Radio Static High, on Bristol’s Rocket Recordings.

The band’s current rich vein of form can certainly be described as intoxicating. Radio Static High is a stunner of an album, trapped in a claustrophobic array of wild sonic adventures, mind-melting riffs and an overriding tautness that makes it creepy as fuck.

Sure, the 12-year-old band is no stranger when it comes to making arresting and hard-to-categorise music. But given that it was only February when its predecessor – In Black and Gold – was revealed, the pattern betrays a band clearly revelling in its new creative power. And any band that can crash out this level of quality, gloriously deranged stoned rock in such an efficient manner is onto something good...

Normans gives Gnoomes Ngan! a 9/10 review

For better or worse, psych rock looks over the horizon. Western bands absorb the musical customs of cultures they’ve never belonged to, mix up different phenomenas and stir them together ‘til they’re all one mushy conglomerate. Contain a bunch of disjointed ideas in swirling riffs and an inescapable echospace and you’ve got a show, right? In recent years, a host of bands have used different cultural versions of psychedelia for aesthetic purposes, so it’s nice to see a band like Gnoomes, who seek to connect their own heritage with others. Hailing from Perm -- a cut-off Russian city used as a place of exile for rebels in the 19th century -- they attempt to create music around isolation, around what it feels like to be a thousand odd miles from centre of things.

‘Ngan!’ is a gorgeous but strangely anonymous record, using psychedelic hypnosis as a crutch but texture as expression; unlike a lot of this  year’s psych jammers, it feels like Gnoomes are trying to communicate songwriter truths, often invoking a plaintive dream pop to go with the space music; not only lyrics, but the heartbroken harmonies that carry their weight. The record’s opener, “Roadhouse”, stretches through elegiac guitars into a more standard-fare bout of psych interplay, but it seeks resounding melodies rather than sore repetition...

The Quietus premier Teeth of the Sea's ‘Field Punishment'

We are very pleased to reveal ‘Field Punishment’, second track from Teeth of the Sea's fourth album  'Highly Deadly Black Tarantula’

See what The Quietus say about it: The Quietus

Teeth of the Sea - Highly Deadly Black Tarantula

In the last decade, the iconoclastic four-pronged force of Teeth Of The Sea has traversed from its origins in North London pub gigs and basement rehearsal rooms to far-flung locales that its members could scarcely have considered possible when they first began. Yet this band has never lost sight of its original vision - to reconcile a fearless experimental drive with a primal lust for noise. To exist outside of all or any compromise. Yet never to lose sight of the crucial irreverence of their inception. Their fourth album ‘Highly Deadly Black Tarantula’, in all its malevolent glory, may well be the apex of their mission thus far.

Following in the wake of the release of their mind-melting third album ‘MASTER’’. 2014 was a bizarre and thrilling year for Teeth Of The Sea, taking them to unexpected territory both physical and metaphysical - a re-imagining of the modern-day midnight movie A Field In England saw performances at both Cork Film Festival and Hackney Picture House, and was released on Rocket Recordings on a limited run for Record Store Day. A new audio-visual piece The Last Man was performed at both Cineglobe Festival in Cern, home of the Large Hadron Particle Collider, and at Transilvania International Film Festival in Cluj-Napoca. What’s more, the band travelled to America for the first time to perform in Austin, Texas for SXSW and to Portugal for Milhoes De Festa, as well as finishing the year off with a comprehensive demolition job of Liverpool Psych Fest.

However, as 2015 dawned, the band set about reinventing themselves once again - both returning from the ornate and expansive sounds of ‘MASTER’ to their gnarled roots and pushing firmly forward in search of adventure anew.  What resulted was ‘Highly Deadly Black Tarantula’, their most focused and aggressive album yet. Machine-driven yet melodically abundant, the widescreen industrial expanses of this album combine the influence of long-time band favourites like Aphex Twin, Angelo Badalamenti and Throbbing Gristle with new inspiration that spans from Chicago footwork to black metal.

What’s more, it’s a collection as rich in scope as it is powerful in intent. Whilst the pummelling and incisive ‘Animal Manservant’ and the kinetic dancefloor attack of ‘Field Punishment’ maintain an audial assault both concise and corrosive, the monomaniacal ‘Have You Ever Held A Bird Of Prey’  represents a fearless plunge into the experimental deep end. Elsewhere, the bleak cinematic drama of ‘All My Venom’ strikes like hammer to anvil, and ‘Love Theme For 1984’  may be the most richly emotive work the band have yet created.

This is no less than a vital reinvention, abusing technology and warping convention to arrive at a monochrome psychedelia as stylish as it is savage. Yet even whilst ushering in delight and deliverance for both fans of this band and the uninitiated, ‘HIghly Deadly Black Tarantula’- a fearsomely coherent assault of post-everything dementia - sounds like no-one but Teeth Of The Sea.

This album is released on Vinyl, CD and Digital on 6th November 2015

Introducing Oneida – Positions EP

Following our announcement of a series of 'Rocket Shop Exclusive' EP's which kicked off with Mamuthones, followed by Goat off-shoot, Capra Informis, Rocket are pleased to announce the third and final EP this year, from Brooklyn's Oneida to be released 27th November 2015.

See what The Quietus say about it: The Quietus

And preorder a Ltd vinyl ONLY on sale from here: Rocket Bandcamp

Press release reads:

ONEIDA - Positions (Launch089)
Possessed of a restless spirit and an uncompromising approach, Brooklyn’s peerless experimental rock iconoclasts Oneida have been delighting and perplexing the wider world for some eighteen years now, never once settling into a recognisable style on a continuing mission that has blown minds, furrowed brows and spun heads at every turn. Informed by the art-orientated mindset of krautrock, the chutzpah of post-punk and the radical ethos of minimalism, yet never falling prey to cliche or homage along the way, this is a band who’ve always seen predictability and comfort as sworn enemies, relentlessly forging forward with a fierce experimental drive .

With this in mind, the fact that their new EP  ‘Positions’ on Rocket Recordings sees them hammering out two cover versions might initially seem like a look backwards for the band, as they take on work from those artists whom they’ve drawn succour and inspiration. Yet as ever with this outfit, things are not that simple, and this 29-minute opus is anything but. In selecting songs by This Heat and Chrome - two bands who have affected the band as much in reckless adventure and synapse-shifting innovation as in revolutionary sonics, the fivesome use the rhythmically intense mantras of the former’s ’S.P.Q.R.’ and the latter’s interstellar trash-trawl of ‘All Data Lost’ - rendered here as a thrilling and intimidating 16 minute psychic voyage -  as mere jumping-off points for searing blasts of kaleidoscopic invention and white-hot intensity that destroy boundaries and defy categorisation at every turn. Adding their own sinister drone-based mantra ‘Under Whose Sword’ for good measure, the result is a work as potent and intense as it is fierily forward-gazing.

Rocket Recordings have been fans and friends of Oneida for some time, having released a vinyl version of their ‘Anthem Of The Moon’ record back in 2003, and they’re delighted to be releasing the latest chapter of the storied history of a band who still stand apart from most any reductive genre tags, maintaining a freshness and vitality that render them a unique and inspirational force, reinventing the soundworld and spirit of psychedelia for all to bear witness  A band who continue to exist outside of scene, time and place, with their feet firmly on the accelerator in search of oblivion and the unknown, to which ‘Positions’ bears mighty testimony.

Gnoomes reveal stunning video for Roadhouse (Edit) + interview by Going Weird

Here is a great new video for the Gnoomes single 'Roadhouse (Edit)'

Going Weird have premiered the video and asked the band some questions, see what they say here: Going Weird

This is what the band sent us about the video maker and concept:

"Alexander Koshelev is an artist and graphic designer from Perm. He is also a director of the project named «Detstvo Design» that aims at finding new visual forms in contemporary spatial and temporal context. Animation is one of the main direction of his activity. (http://detstvo-design.ru)

The idea of the video for Gnoomes track ‘Roadhouse’ was spontaneous but very lucid: "It’s a trip that everyone should experience with eyes wide shut". Everything that shown on the screen is a mixture of reminiscences, feelings and dreams etc. It's all passing away like the events of our lives and turning into something colorful and unreal in the end. This video is a kind of psychedelic road movie from Urals where the main role is played by not the real person but the old house - the place where Gnoomes write their music. Special part devotes to Axolotl - the symbol of pure energy. In the end we can see that the Roadhouse and Axolotl are integrating into each other and their meaningful boundaries blur away. In other words, this tail-peace could be a new point of departure for this Roadhouse and Gnoomes specially."
