Read Paddy Shine's The Quietus Bakers Dozen Interview

It reads:

Let It Happen: Paddy Shine's Baker's Dozen

Paddy Shine is one of the most relentless instigators in the underground, both as part of Gnod and in myriad other projects. Ahead of the release of his collaborative folk project Moundabout alongside Phil Masterson on Rocket this summer, he guides Harry Sword through 13 vital slabs.

Imbued with cosmic magnificence and chaos energy, the music of Paddy Shine - both his work in Gnod, solo recordings and countless collaborations - simultaneously taps multiple facets of the modern underground and an ancient, palpably mossy bearing.

Since 2007, Gnod have operated not so much as band but more free wheeling audio hydra, encompassing a welter of collaborators and channelling sounds that roam from hypnotic dronewerks (Infinity Machines; Mirror) to raging politicised noise rock (Just Say No To The Pyscho Right Wing Capitalist Facist Death Machine; La Mort Du Sens) and roiling, dense psychedelia firmly planted in specific time and place (Hexen Valley).

Based for many years at a housing cooperative/arts centre in Islington Mill in Salford, Gnod (who now revolve around a tighter nucleas of Paddy Shine, Jesse Webb and Chris Haslam from a Hebden Valley base) hone in on a hypnotic, distorted but frequently propulsive sweet spot shared by bands on labels like God Unknown, Rocket and Wrong Speed - the weirder, wonkier side of heavy, essentially - while their Tesla Tapes imprint has also served as a vital underground hub for the wider Gnod family, with an eclectic release schedule encompassing lo-fi electronics, industrial, field recordings and all manner else...

Swedish trio OCH announce their second track to be taken from forthcoming album 'Pö om pö'

Last month Swedish trio OCH revealed the track 'Bolid' – the first single to be released from 'Pö om pö', the band's second album for Rocket and will be released on 27 May.

It has been great hearing 'Bolid' getting lots of spins on BBC 6 Music – and now hopefully the kosmische repetitive rhythms of follow-up single 'Silverstjärnan' will do the same.

The band say 'Silverstjärnan' is about the small fragments of reality and dream when half asleep during a trip with train or bus. Not sure where you are, or even where you are going.

You can watch the band made video for 'Silverstjärnan' above.

'Pö om pö' is available on ltd edition 'Ceremony Purple' vinyl from here:

Bandcamp

Pö om pö (meaning ‘little by little’) is a journey further into inner space from ‘II’, the bands previous album. It’s a still more expansive and vibrant transmission from the ether which distills kaleidoscopic rapture and oracular intensity from a variety of sources. The excursions here are jam-based in origin but lucid in approach, crepuscular in aspect but uplifting in effect.

Dwelling in a smoke-clouded glow that’s equal parts sunset gold and effects pedal red, OCH have here transcended all influences to creating a tapestry of potent psychotropic sound. A record in which new horizons open up beyond the small hours, and where primeval wah-wah-abetted skronk and mantric folk-tinged repetition can collude to reveal new third-eye perceptions. Little By Little, Pö om pö, these forty minutes are here to bridge the chasms between conscious and subconscious, and in style.

The Holy Family's new single 'Kinked' is released today

To coincide with the bands debut shows they have released a new single which can now be heard on all streaming channels and via this Bandcamp link:

There is a ltd edition 7" of the single but sadly they were only available via their live shows!

-

The Holy Family return with their first new music since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2021. ‘Kinked’ is a two track single that sees the band pay homage to the mighty  Kinks, with versions of what the band consider as their two most psychedelic songs, ‘Fancy’ and ‘Rainy Day In June’, both taken from  from their 1966 album ‘Face To Face’

“I’m a huge fan of the musical vision of Ray Davies and The Kinks.” says David J. Smith the mastermind behind The Holy Family. “I chose these 2 tracks as they represent the most psychedelic the group ever were and best compliment The Holy Family aesthetic. It was the closest they came to some form of Dream Raga Mysticism in a sense. Veering away from the social realism/kitchen sink/English village green subject matter they are best known for. They were never a psychedelic group but they were among the first exponents to experiment with drone and Indian raga themes in Western popular music.” David continues to say “I always wanted to do a version of Fancy since hearing Hugo Largo’s wonderful version of it on their debut album Drum in 1988.”

These two tracks were born out of spontaneous sessions David had in his home studio while isolating with Covid. “I also felt it would be an interesting challenge to document/push my voice while coping with the infection.” David recounts. “I then presented these sessions to the rest of the group and we collectively added bass, piano, and some guitar. I then set to work on the mixing virtually with my long standing collaborator and engineer Antti Uusimaki who worked his usual magic bringing the whole thing to life.”

The end result distinctly has the otherworldly The Holy Family sound, taking classic Kinks songs and marrying them with a relentless dream logic into one unifying kaleidoscopic vision.

Mercurial and mystical yet charged with an addictive and primal energy - submit to their spell, and join The Holy Family.

Recorded in a vociferously windy area of Enseneda, Mexico, where Lorena spent a strict lockdown, ‘Del Aire’ exorcises the troubles she encountered during the period, in the process creating both what she describes as a “continuity and discontinuity” from ‘Hibiscus’, and extracting a similar, yet fresh strain of emotional complexity.

With the atmospheric and natural theme of air at the heart of the creative process, Lorena has created an extraordinarily spacious work. The synths of ‘Lineal’ thrive on pulse-like repetition, gathering from a luscious sweeping panorama into a bruising orchestral crescendo. Elsewhere, as on ‘Del Aire’ the discordant-meets-melodic sonics dwell somewhere adjacent to Gazelle Twin. Both Lorena’s vocals and her distinctive crystalline avant aesthetic are writ large throughout the reverberations of ‘Cruce’ and ‘Horizonte’ as well as on the anxiety-rending exhortations closing the surreally meditative ‘Outsides’.

Parts beautifully reflects organic instrumentation through Lorena’s electronic prism. ‘Ráfaga’, meanwhile, sees caustic drums enact glitchy, stop-start rhythms. Here, and on the hypnotic ‘Nina’, Lorena gilds the narcotic power of Miles Davis’s ‘On The Corner’ – with trumpet recorded by Freddie Murphy (Father Murphy) – into electronically contorted shapes.

Through the mellifluous repetition, the cathartic buzzsaw moments and the elemental force of the album’s conceptual core, ‘Del Aire’ acts as an intimate echo chamber vicariously healing the listener’s wounds besides Lorena’s own.

Holy Scum feat. Dälek, GNOD and Action Beat members announce debut album with striking new video

Holy Scum, the four piece band featuring Mike Mare (Dälek,) Peter J Taylor (formerly of Action Beat), Chris Haslam (GNOD) and Jon Perry (GNOD) announce their debut album 'Strange Desires' which is being released on 10 June. The bludgeoning sludge, and feedback drenched collection of songs was mastered by the legend that is Justin Broadrick.

Watch the acid fried video made by Rocket's John O'Carroll for first track to be revealed, the repetitive fog of sound of 'Everybody Takes You Just Take More' above.

'Strange Desires' is available to preorder on ltd edition 'Pink Fog' vinyl from Bandcamp:

12 June / Manchester White Hotel (w/ Dälek)
13 June / Newcastle Cluny (w/ Dälek)
14 June / Bristol The Lanes (w/ Dälek)
16 June / Glasgow Bloc+ (w/ Dälek)

-

Initially solely a Manchester-based collaboration between Peter, Chris and Jon – Holy Scum’s debut album 'Strange Desires' is a collection of intense jam sessions from the trio recorded deep inside an old Victorian mill. These subsequent tracks were the pulled apart in production by one of half of legendary hip-hop duo Dälek, Mike Mare (aka Mike Manteca). Mile also provides the growling, guttural vocals that fight the elements around them.

The result is a thunderous tumult of sound – slabs of synapse-mangling noise that snarl their way through the scorched earth of Mare’s production. As the group howled and thrashed their way through the surrounding sonic fire, Mare kept his vocal takes to single run-throughs, keen to keep the spontaneity of the original sessions front and centre of the album.

'Strange Desires' is a record for the moment, and beyond. A celebration of the collaborative spirit in all of its twisted forms, and a howl amidst a world fallen off its axis. Holy Scum are unflinching in their confrontation of it, meeting fire with fire on this most stunning debut.

Moundabout – the duo of Paddy Shine (GNOD) and Phil Masterson reveal new video

Moundabout the new project from Paddy Shine of Gnod and Phil Masterson of Los Langeros/Damp Howl/Bisect, are releasing heir debut album for Rocket ‘Flowers Rot, Bring Me Stones’ on 27 May.

Following the song 'Bog Bodies', the band have now released 'Bring Me Stones', the second track to be revealed from the album. Watch another great video made by Rocket's John O'Carroll exclusively via Echoes And Dust here:

Echoes and Dust

'Flowers Rot, Bring Me Stones’ is available to preorder on 'Megalithic Brown & Clear Vinyl' from here:

Listening to ‘Flowers Rot, Bring Me Stones’ is like entering a trance state while staring at one of the Knowth spiral carvings at Brú na Bóinne in Ireland - the megalithic art in the neolithic “passage tombs” which also contain the oldest known representation of the moon made by man.

As the album moves the listener, they are taken on a geographical and geological journey as well as psychological and spiritual, traveling inwards from the coast as well as down beneath the strata. And when you have been primed, it takes you all the way back to commune with older gods on the album’s epic centrepiece, ‘Dick Dalys Dance’, creating the kind of prehistoric drones and trance-inducing rhythms that the echoing, celestially aligned corridors of the Brú na Bóinne were built to amplify.

Teeth of the Sea release live recording

Another great Bandcamp Friday release you need to buy today is this killer live recording of Teeth of the Sea from 2009 when they supported the mighty Oneida at TheGarage in London.

It was a bit of a Rocket night too as Johnny bathed the bands in lights and Chris DJ'd!

Buy from here:

Bandcamp

This is what the band say about the release:

"2009 was a strange and pivotal year for Teeth of the Sea, as we moved from the realm of smoke-scented and lager-lit rehearsal rooms to a wilder world. ‘Orphaned by the Ocean’ - our debut album - came out in January, startling no-one more than the band themselves when it attracted plaudits from heads the like of band godhead Julian Cope and Terrascope. Yet one of the biggest mind-benders came whilst traversing the country in our first short tour, with NYC leviathans Oneida.

There were certain totemic records which were the raw materials for TOTS’ s chimerical and not always coherent racket in these days - we’re talking about the like of Wolf Eyes, Lightning Bolt, Comets on Fire, Big Business, Shit & Shine, Marnie Stern, and Zombi amongst a whole host of other often American bezerkers destroying eardrums in dingy basement venues, mixing an avant-garde sensibility with a monomaniacal urge to crank up the volume and the intensity.

Ever since we’d heard 2002's ‘Each One Teach One’, Oneida had been one of the most potent of these, and it was therefore a strange honour to be sharing stages with this band, one who may have been light years ahead of us as musicians but whose sensibilities - we flatter ourselves - were somewhat simpatico with our own.

All of this came to a head at The Garage in Highbury, North London, on Tuesday August 18th, at which the combination of the volume, the summer climes, the sense of occasion, and Johnny O’s incendiary and mind-melting light show combined to provide something akin to an out of body experience for those of us onstage.

Unbeknownst to us, a chap in the audience by the name of Chris Booker was recording the whole thing. When we stumbled across the recording thanks to him nearly thirteen years later, it was a not unflattering Proustian rush given this was seemingly one of the only gigs we managed that year where we all stayed in tune. We figured the chills were probably worth sharing, so here’s twenty minutes of it, a strange holiday snap of a band watching the stars align in front of their very eyes."

Track listing:

1 - Sentimental Journey
2 - Swear Blind The Alsatian's Melting
3 - Hypnoticon Viva

The formation of Hexen Valley began in summer 2021 when Gnod’s Paddy Shine moved to Hebden Bridge to join fellow protagonists Chris Haslam and Jesse Webb in a co-op house at the 200-year-old Nutclough Tavern. As has been the case since the formation of Gnod, the line-up of the collective shifted and morphed to fit circumstances - soon they were joined by fellow Nutclough resident Richard Chamberlain on guitar, and in the Hebden Bridge Underground rehearsal studio the four soon began intensive jamming in which certain distinct songs and themes began to emerge.

Hexen Valley is where a monolithic sonic force - charged by the energy of its surroundings -makes contact with other realms. It’s the sound of a band whose fearsome intensity is only matched by their evolutionary drive. It’s Gnod at full power, and it’s a haunted place you might struggle to leave.
