Collective Zine reviews PETBRICK - I

They say:

A strange and savage pairing here, which pits Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura, Mixhell) against Wayne Adams (Big Lad, Death Pedals). While the pair might seem like an odd match on paper the results are mind-flayingly cogent, combining huge, subhuman beats with white-hot blasts of electronic mayhem. Heavy metal, industrial, noise, techno and Warp-damaged electronica are all thrown into the mix, along with vocal contributions from the likes of Dylan Walker (Full Of Hell), Laima Leyton (Mixhell) and Dwid (Integ, obviously, but perhaps more tellingly in this instance Psywarfare). While the ensuing chaos could easily have sounded haphazard there's a strong and convincing throughline to be found, the record hanging together brilliantly whether the duo are peeling skin from your face, smothering you with fizzling ambience or goading you to dance until you sweat your last drop of miserable life blissfully away....

NARC reviews Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs live at Brave Exhibitions

They say:

...Tonight however was always going to belong to Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, and this is a suitably assured and confident homecoming in front of a sold out Cluny crowd: they may be an unlikely success story, but their amalgamation of doom metal bona fides with a rare melodic sensibility (plus some outstanding showmanship from frontman Matthew Baty) could be a world conquering combination....

ORE interview Gnoomes about their up-and-coming Italian tour

They say:

A few years ago, when collecting various post-kraut sounds, I came across the name Gnoomes. I was delighted to discover Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation's remix of this band's track "Roadhouse," which features monotone and motor pulsation and psychedelic vocals. Last year I finally got ready to visit Bolfest in Moscow. While researching the program for this event, I rejoiced to discover the familiar name Gnoomes, but I was terribly surprised that this group is from… one of the most important Ural industrial centers in Perm. I had heard about this city, except that R.Vaisvila, K.Lavrinovic, G.Kadžiulis and T.Pacėsas played at Ural Great Basketball Club in their time. This is my acquaintance with Gnoomes, tomorrow they release the EP "Irma" and in early December will play for the first time in Lithuania.

In the autumn, Alexander Pyankov, the vocalist and bassist of the says group, wrote to the editorial office asking if we could help organize a concert in Vilnius. After the acquaintance described above, we simply could not give up and co-operated with the DIY concert organizers Facial Tumour Booking..

Onda Rock reviews Julie's Haircut's In the Silence Electric

They say:

A few weeks ago, talking on the phone with Luca Giovanardi, we were thinking about how important it could be to grow up in the restless and paranoid Emilia at the turn of the 80s and 90s, if you loved music and could play an instrument. On one side or the other, in a city or in a country among many (think of the incredible story of a place like Correggio, for example), the big ones used to come over there and if you positioned yourself under the stage you had things to learn. Emilia was the equivalent of a metropolis in this sense. Not that all this can explain the story and in some way the success of Julie's Haircut , but it can motivate its vocation - always very present - to get out of the provincial logic of the Italian scene.

In the meantime 25 round round years have passed since the foundation of the then university band based in Bologna, and the albums of the Emilian combo come out for the London giant Rocket Recordings. A sort of achievement of a status quo for Julie's but they are far from interrupting their musical explorations, which indeed go further and further. "In The Silence Electric" could be, but it will be the story to tell, the right conclusion of the "psychedelic decade" inaugurated just 10 years ago with...

Sentireascoltare premieres new Gnoomes single

This Friday the Russian outfit Gnoomes who blend a potent mix of psychedelic stargaze, kraut techno and kosmiche pop are releasing a new three track single 'Irma' – the third single from their latest album MU!. And you can listen to it two days early exclusively via Italian site Sentireascoltare.

Listen here: Sentireascoltare

'Irma' like the rest of MU! was recorded in the same old soviet radio station where the band recorded their second album Tschak!. This was to ensure the best capture of Gnoomes live assault. The results brim with a magnitude and sense of coherence that belies some of the environment it was created in. Fuzz-driven guitars shift in engulfing waves, resembling shoegaze giants at their most ferocious, whilst layered vocals stack on top of one another, weaving between pristine melody and augmented discordance. The track pulses with an electronic tinge that bubbles more subtly under the surface of immersive guitars.

The single comes with two b-sides, the first is an unreleased song called
Xmas Decay – a perfect slice of shoegaze pop where melody and soaring guitars collide and shimmer.

Following that we have a techno-driven remix of Irma by Russian producer and multi-instrumentalist Radiooff, real name Eugeniy Gorbunov. He is the person who produced the album Mu! with the band so has a very close relationship to the sounds the band create.

Read Iggor Cavalera's Bakers Dozen for the Quietus

They say:

Roots: Iggor Cavalera Of Sepultura & Petbrick's Favourite LPs
Iggor Cavalera guides Louise Brown through the records that shaped his drumming with Sepultura and new work with Petbrick, from AFX to Black Flag and Discharge, Nyege Nyege's Nihiloxica, Devo, New Kingdom, Dr Octagon and more

The well-heeled suburb of North London that Iggor Cavalera now lives in is a far-cry from impoverished Belo Horizonte. It was in this Brazilian city where he and his brother would form legendary thrash/death band Sepultura in 1984, inspired by the Venom and Hellhammer albums they found on their many trips to a record shop in nearby Sao Paulo.

Sepultura are now rightly placed in the halls of heavy metal legend and every rivethead worth their salt knows the myth of how the brothers would paint spent AA batteries to recreate the bullet belts of their thrash heroes. They know too how Iggor and his brother Max would test the heavy metal world's appetite for the otherworldly by combining their own Brazilian tempos and instrumentation with industrial and electronic elements to create a game-changing and head-spinning collision of sounds through world-beating classics of the genre Chaos AD and the aptly-titled Roots.

In his home studio there are few clues that you're in the midst of extreme metal royalty. There’s only a tapestry blanket, thrown over a chair and emblazoned with band logos from Slayer to Iron Maiden to Manowar and inexplicably Stryper, that would reflect its owner's former musical obsessions. "Isn't it great?," he beams, coming in and seeing how enamoured tQ are with the textile. "Sepultura is on there somewhere. Laima got it for me from a shop in Shoreditch."

The room is otherwise the expected domain of an eclectic and music-hungry, well-travelled, playful collector. There's a coffee table book on Devo, instruments and gadgets and production tools, signs that a Morricone soundtrack LP was being played just before we arrived and a huge television/sound system that we later learn is key to Iggor's many forays into a YouTube or Bandcamp wormhole. As we get to business in one room, Laima is in the kitchen, answering emails regarding upcoming Soulwax shows, a band she frequently collaborates with as a performer...

Paranoid Park reviews Julie's Haircut's In The Silence Electric

They say:

Julie's Haircut moves at ease in psychedelic, electronic and post-rock sounds, giving life to songs in which the threshold of noise rises and falls continuously, in a persuasive and pleasant way, between the soft, light and lysergic textures of synth and the abrupt and excruciating feedback of the guitars.

"In The Silence Electric" knows how to be, at the same time, urgent and meditative, with sudden flashes of light, enhanced and enriched by saxes, to illuminate the night; but although the light is intense and dazzling, soon the darkness will regain the upper hand and surround everything that surrounds it, including our rational ability to perceive time and space.

This leads us to go beyond the limits of reality and matter, thus finding ourselves wandering in a fluid and spiritual dimension in which the darkwave sounds drown in our own mind. We thus find ourselves lost under layers and layers of different sounds that intertwine and confuse each other, giving the disk a dramatic and disturbing depth, as if it were a soundtrack that accompanies an immersion in the darkest and most dangerous depths of the ocean..

Brooklyn Vegan say some words about Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs show in New York next year

They say:

Newcastle upon Tyne stoner rockers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (or Pigsx7) have already earned a good deal of hype in their home country, and 2020 looks to be the year they’ll make their mark in the US. They’re coming over for SXSW 2020, and right beforehand, they’ll play Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus on March 13. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (11/15) at 10 AM.

At the moment, Saint Vitus and SXSW are Pigs’ only upcoming US dates, but they’re also doing a UK tour in spring 2020, and playing Desertfest Berlin (with Witchcraft, Amenra, Corrosion of Conformity, Spirit of Adrift, and more) and Pohoda Festival (with Thom Yorke, black midi, Kokoroko, and more).

The band’s latest album is 2018’s King of Cowards, which features contributions from folk singer Richard Dawson (whose live band features two members of Pigs), and it’s been hailed by UK press as their most accessible yet. (Partially because its 2017 predecessor Feed the Rats features two 15+ songs, though that album is still pretty accessible too.) They usually sound somewhere between a rawer, heavier Queens of the Stone Age and a more streamlined, accessible Electric Wizard (particularly on the very Electric Wizard-sounding “Shockmaster”)...

Nine Feet Underground reviews GNOD live in Reading

They say:

Gnod playing in Reading?  At South Street Arts Centre! I cannot miss this...

A cold Thursday night beckons, get there early, get some drinks in and see the support, Typical Hunks, a local band.  Checked them out on Bandcamp, sound OK - always good to hear new bands. Yep, nicely set up for the evening.

Typical Hunks took to the stage - a two-piece, guitar, bass and a drum machine - let's hear it for the trusty drum machine, a revival, perhaps?

Didn't warm to them at first, but as the drum machine cranked up, more rhythmic numbers were played. Bass lines and drum patterns snaking around each other, sprinkled atop with angular, spiky guitar lines and equally spiky vocals.  The magic formula slowly emerged. Thirty minutes or so later, they were spent, done.

Would I seek them out? Maybe - if they were on the bill, I'd watch them. Figure there was a kernel of something in their tunes that could become something interesting...

Grab another drink ahead of Gnod...

Wasn't sure what the line-up was going to be - sometimes two drummers, two bass players and two guitars - tonight there was only one bass, but oh what a bass...

Read Stereoboard interview with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs

They say:

Newcastle, a city perched on the Tyne river in the north east of England, is a relatively small place. A 10 minute taxi journey is all it takes to get from one end of the centre to the other, and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs vocalist Matt Baty and guitarist Adam Ian Sykes credit those intimate surroundings with helping to usher along the assembly of the uncompromising band, who take an alternative, almost noise-rock, approach to metal.

“If you’re into anything that’s remotely niche you start to bump into the same people, so that’s kind of how it formed,” Baty explains. He’s also a well known member of the local music scene thanks to operating the label Box Records for the last 10 years and playing in alt-folk star Richard Dawson’s band, alongside Pigsx7 bassist John-Michael Hedley.

Completed by guitarist Sam Grant and drummer Christopher Morley, Pigsx7 came together after Sykes, Baty and Hedley’s ventures in other “friendlier” bands and as a result of mutual friendships, with an appreciation for Black Sabbath uniting them all. As a unit they've put out two albums through Rocket Recordings—their three-track, 36-minute 2017 debut ‘Feed The Rats’ and 2018’s punishing ‘King of Cowards’...

Gum Takes Tooth release new single – includes Broken English Club remix

Gum Takes Tooth released their latest album 'Arrow' earlier this year to great praise that gathered a legion of new fans and today sees the release of new single ‘No Walls, No Air’.

"Look skyward and nod thankfully” The Quietus
-
“A totally modern sound" The Wire
-
“Clinically f*cked-off bombast” Loud and Quiet

‘No Walls, No Air’, is the fourth single to be released from the flagrantly unclassifiable album ‘Arrow’, it's a seven minute warp driven, euphonic chemical acidic demolition workout. And the stunning b-side (listen above) sees a re-realising of the track by FACT Magazine/Resident Advisor favourite and Marie Davidson label-mate, UK Techno producer Broken English Club, née Oliver Ho.

Broken English Club forges a bold and brutal Balladian path through EBM, Noise, Post Punk and Industrial influences in his own stunning material and in collaborations with Californian producer Silent Servant with output on labels Cititrax and Jealous God.

Listen to both tracks here: Bandcamp

Gum Takes Tooth are mavericks to the last, perpetual square-pegs and a band intent on forging onward to break all or any paradigms before them, creating kinetic anthems to battle everyday oppression - machine-driven mania with a very human heart on its sleeve.

'Arrow' is available to buy on ltd edition 2xlp red/grey vinyl and ltd CD from here: Buy LP/CD

The band are joining label mates Teeth of The Sea at a very special Manchester show next year:

Relics Controsuoni reviews Julie's Haircuts In the Silence Electric

They say:

The Emilian band has accustomed us for years to experimentation, but never as in this new album are there sounds and avant-garde suggestions. In the silence electric , the second job that Sassuolo's training publishes for an English label, Rocket Recordings .

The result is a sound journey full of ideas, including ambient references, hints of post-rock and psychedelic passages. The opening song entitled Anticipation of the night is a narcoleptic psychedelic ballad, a prelude to the accelerations that we find in the next Emerald kiss , from the acid and convulsive arrangement. Sometimes the voices are filtered, and this creates a greater sense of alienation. Excellent performance of Sorcerer , full of cosmic and pulsating sound. The most beautiful track is undoubtedly the hypnotic Darlings of the sun , avant-garde and free-jazz experiments, fascinating in its progress with sax plots. No less Until the lights go out, in which there are floydian influences that refer to the record A Saucerful of Secrets...
