Illustrated Tapes puts Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – King of Cowards in their Albums of the Year

They say:

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - King of Cowards
Rocket, 28 September
Artwork: Sophy Hollington

First off, this album is wall to wall, solid gold bangers. Kind of like the lovechild of The Fall and Black Sabbath, who has been cautioned by the police for possession of a massive bag of skunk, a bong in the shape of a skull and a copy of ‘The Holy Mountain’ on DVD.

Aside from the fact it’s a full on riff-o-rama, the artwork by Sophy Hollington is absolutely incredible. It summons up the sound of the band, via folk horror infused wildness. It really captures the sonic landscape of the album, yet completely avoids any of the cliched imagery that could so easily have taken its place. It really is the whole package.

Riserva Indie puts Lay Llamas album Thuban in their albums of the year

They say (loosely translated):

Italian psychedelic music starts to get noticed in an important way. All this also thanks to new realities. Capaci as in the case of the Lay Llamas to realize ingenious products in generis as precisely Thuban. Tribal atmospheres in there Goat and really brilliant songs as in the case of Altair and Eyes-Chest People's Dance Ritual. The greatness of this band listening to the album, seems to be that of knowing how to always create something new every time you trace the tracks. A true Italian pride.

Anthroprophh and MIEN in Tomorrow Hit Today 20 albums of the year

They say:

11. Anthroprophh - Omegaville (Rocket Recordings)
The Anthroprophh were born in 2012 as a side project by Paul Allen of The Heads and in just 6 years already have a nice handful of records. "Omegaville" is the only album released in 2018 but counts at least for two since it lasts an hour and a half! The first part is definitely more suitable for lovers of the psychedelic garage with short and wild songs, overhung by the sound of wah-wah to Blue Cheer and Hendrix and almost punk rage. The second part, instead, is a tribute to the Can di Tago Mago: so long psychedelic kraut rock trips very freakettoni, treated with ribbons, loops and assorted stramberie. Both the two souls are of great quality and make a record not to be missed for fans of The Heads and not.

16. MIEN - MIEN (Rocket Recordings)
Tom Furse Cowan, keyboardist of Horros, Rishi Dhir bassist and sitarist of Datsons / High Deals / Elephant Stone, John Mark Lapham of
Earlies and Alex Mass, lead singer of Black Angels, joined forces in MIEN , a psychedelic quartet that flirts with electronics, kraut, obsessive rhythms, filtered voices, percussion, world music, Indian flavors, dub and all that can make you out of your mind. A study work, suitable for those who do not disdain the "synthetic" taste of psychedelia.

Goatman's Rhythms in Birthday Cake for Breakfasts 'Top 50 of 2018'

They say:

Goatman – ‘Carry The Load’
(Rhythms, Rocket Recordings)
I first heard this record one late afternoon in the office, trying to maintain my composure whilst the hypnotising sounds coming through the headphones were doing their best to send my head spinning like a top. From one of the mysterious bods behind Swedish collective Goat, ‘Carry The Load’ is a total mind-expanding psych journey.

Julie's Haircut & Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in Nine Hertz 'Top Ten Live Bands of 2018'

They say:

Julie’s Haircut, Rocket 20, London The Garage, 9th March
Rocket Recordings reached 20 years as a label this year. Always a label close to our hearts, they celebrated with a weekender at The Garage. I could only make the opening night, but among other highlights, including the always impressive Flowers Must Die, were Italians Julie’s Haircut. Truly psychedelic and trippy, their brand of neo-psyche and hippy vibes created a party-like atmosphere for the evening and with some truly tripped-out visuals being projected, was also a colourful feast for the eyes.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Sheffield Picturehouse Social, 22nd November
One of the most meteoric rises of a psychedelic band recently witnessed, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs have become BBC Radio 6Music darlings this year and with good reason. Their blend of Sabbath worship with a David Yow sexual sleaze element mean they have a louche swagger live. Songs like Thumbsucker thrill with their plodding, yet seedy manner and apart from topless frontman Matt Baty the rest of the band stay motionless and let the volume do the talking. The damp and claustrophobic area they played at Sheffield’s Picturehouse Social provided the perfect surroundings for their filth. They also impressed at ArcTanGent Festival in the hot summer, their sweaty riffola suiting the muggy, close heat. They are touring with Part Chimp in the new year, be there.

Rocket's Chris Reeder talks to Raven Sings The Blues about 5 of his favourite sleeve designs

They say:

There have been plenty of touchstone labels around here, but I’d wager to say that Rocket Recordings is up there in the top ten that get referenced on the site. Their take on psych and metal is always interesting and always quality, but aside from just digging up some of the best band, the label also embraces a spotless design aesthetic that I’ve always been attracted to. This comes largely in part from label heads Chris Reeder and John O’Carroll, who both contribute sleeves to their stable of releases. Design in psych and metal can either be transcendent (see Design Inspiration: Arik Roper) or drag the releases into parody. Reeder and O’Carroll fall squarely in the former camp, elevating their releases to art pieces visually as well as aurally.

Reeder and O’Carroll both agreed to contribute picks to Design Inspiration, but I’ll focus first on Chris Reeder. His sleeves have a clean design that’s crisp and classic at the same time, rendering them iconic each time. If you’re familiar with the output of Goat, GNOD, Lay Llamlas, Pigs x 7 and Hey Colossus, then you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about. Chris dives into five of his all time favorites, but leaves the caveat: “It is really hard to pick only 5 sleeves as so many have meant so much over the years, but on the day I wrote this piece these are the 5 that I wanted to talk about.”..

Crackle Feedback makes Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs their Album of the Year

They say:

No.1
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - King of Cowards
What we said: "Right from the off, even with some unassuming light feedback and what by all accounts should be a bog-standard bluesy bassline, there's the sense that there's something creeping round the corner. A bit like that sense of unease/dread you get watching a Michael Haneke film (or maybe watching Brexit unfold). But here, there are no unanswered questions (and very little subtlety), what we get is a full on bombardment of doom drenched rock n roll. And that doom is an absolute joy to behold."

Birthday Cake for Breakfast puts Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in their Top 50 Tracks of the year

They say:

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – ‘GNT’
(King Of Cowards, Rocket Recordings)
Whilst Newcastle’s Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs would make any End of Year list based on name alone, they’ve also got the musical chops to back it up. From the brilliantly titled LP ‘King Of Cowards’ comes this heavy, Sabbath-esque howler in a digestible (for them) running time. Brutal.

Teeth of the Sea reveal new album 'WRAITH' with their track 'Hiraeth'

We are totally thrilled to share with you the brand new Teeth of the Sea track 'Hiraeth' –
the first track to be revealed from their forthcoming album WRAITH. The album will be released on the 22nd February and you can listen to the amazing 'Hiraeth' above.

‘Hiraeth’ - its title deriving from a Welsh word meaning a longing for home - may be the most richly cinematic track the band has ever created. Building from a bleak and beatific Morricone-esque soundscape haunted by melancholic brass, it builds to a furious and dramatic crescendo underpinned by a merciless electronic pulse and dub-tinged disorientation alike.

You can stream the track here: Wraith
Or buy form here: Bandcamp

-

Press Release:

Who can say when, or how, the Wraiths began to make their presence felt. Yet when Teeth Of The Sea entered their base of operations The Facility to begin work in Autumn 2017 on their fifth album - the follow-up to 2015’s Highly Deadly Black Tarantula - it seemed hard to deny that these ghostly interruptions were at play. By November, all three members were in
agreement that the disturbances were tangible and impossible to ignore.

It wasn’t just the more familiar spectres of the band’s collective and overactive imagination - the unruly morass of ‘80s horror and sci-fi movies, industrial ballast, 2000AD terror, ‘70s-damaged experimental brinksmanship and atmospheric grandeur that they’d somehow conspire to sculpt into coherent structures. For as much as the band were determined to create a vivid and maximalist work that threw all of the wildest imagination into sharp relief, what resulted summarily went beyond anything they could have expected.

Moving down to Soup Studios, located in the liminal zone of East India Dock on the Thames, these spectres contributed to influence a collection of tracks that soon began to represent a fearsome and transporting marriage of the ferocious and the melancholic. Alchemised trash, kitchen-sink surrealism, out-of-order intensity and ritualistic overtones collides and colluded into a monstrous hybrid - this was a world where Tetsuo-The Iron Man would happily share space with Judee Sill, and where the acid guitars of Helios Creed would happily conspire with the Acid Rock of Rhythm Device.

’I’d Rather, Jack’ sees Erol Alkan using all the tools at his Phantasy Sound studio to manifest its strains into an angular banger equal parts mariachi elegy and electro euphoria. Percussionist Valentina Magaletti (Tomaga/Raime/Vanishing Twin) brought her unique talents to the Reichian (Steve/Wilhelm) epiphany of ‘VISITOR’. Chlöe Herington (Chrome Hoof/Knifeworld/Valve) and Katharine Gifford (The Wargs/Snowpony/ Stereolab) were also on board to assist this unholy assemblage of inspiration, irreverence and otherworldly infiltration.

Teeth Of The Sea are frankly none the wiser as to what these disturbances meant and what caused them - a fissure in the astral plane, psychic disturbances brought on by societal collapse, or just a collective hallucination. Whichever, they can’t help but be grateful that these voices and visions made their mark on this record, and can only hope the music has allowed them safe passage to the beyond. Ladies and Gentlemen, pray silence for the Wraith.

CRACK puts Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – King of Cowards in their Albums of the Year

They say:

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs
King of Cowards

The second album from Geordie five-piece Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (that’s seven pigs), took their exhilarating live shows and made them flesh. In the main it works: songs sound like molten tar oozing out of the speakers, capturing the lightning of their white knuckle delivery in the proverbial grimy bottle. Singer Matt Baty takes on all seven deadly sins as he howls through GNT which revels in its Black Sabbath rattle, while A66 pulverises with raucous, hedonistic venom. While it doesn’t always hit as hard as those incendiary live shows, swaggering closing track Gloamer is where their manifesto is set, the track tumbling into the abyss for four minutes as demented guitar relentlessly hammers your head until it falls apart.

Louder than War puts Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – King of Cowards in their Albums of The Year

They say:

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – King Of Cowards (Rocket Recordings)
The Iggy-esque drive to dementia, Sabbath-esque squalor and Motörhead-style dirt may still be present and correct yet the songs are leaner, the long-drawn-out riff-fests sharpened into addictive hammer blows and the nihilistic dirges of yore alchemically transformed into an uplifting and inviting barrage of hedonistic abandon.

Get into this and Songwriting give love to Gum Takes Tooth's Broken Lies single

They say:

Gum Takes Tooth – Borrowed Lies
Knowing nothing about the strangely named Gum Takes Tooth, I approached this track with an open mind, a clean slate for The Gums, as I have decided to start calling them, to write on as they will.

Borrowed Lies gets off to a frenetic start with wildly syncopated drums and fuzz bass before vocals appear and give the song some anchor. There is a hint pf Psych about this, with spacey reverb heavy vocals. When the guitar and keyboards kick in however the song is transformed into a snarling beast. There are hints of a more energetic Loop or a psychedelic Stateless, neither of these are compliments I throw around lightly.

Borrowed Lies gives the impression that Gum Takes Tooth would be an impressive act to catch live. The video seems to feature live footage, with strobes showing the band only intermittently. Between this and the song itself, Gum Takes Tooth would seem to be a hugely enjoyable assault on the senses.

After repeated plays, I firmly hope my 2019 includes a few of their gigs. Impressive stuff.

See the full piece: Get Into This

-

Gum Takes Tooth – Borrowed Lies
A manipulated drumbeat that’s dragged from a dystopian nightmare propels this scuzzy call to arms. It’s a bludgeoning electro-psych alarm which is strangely pleasing to be battered by. If Gum Takes Tooth’s purpose is to stir us from our collective malaise, you can consider us roused. DH

Three Rocket releases in The Quietus albums of the year

Once again The Quietus has put some Rocket albums in their 'Albums of the year' round-up:

Including:

Anthroprophh – OMEGAVILLE
On Omegaville, Anthroprophh keep pushing and pushing, laying on one oppressive and opaque layer after another, and delving further and deeper into their only semi-imagined dystopia. There is another of those pauses before ‘I’, a track on which they intensify their assault once more with a colossal roar, the precursor to the outer reaches.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – King of Cowards
King Of Cowards opens with a simmer, a descending bass riff bubbling away until it boils over into an intergalactic launch of searing noise, and you’re reminded that this is a band of quite tremendous power. Baty’s vocals are more colossal than ever, surfing the monolithic wave with an almighty howl. The rest of the Pigs are on agile form, switching momentum from cosmic rushes to almighty, crushing descents without hesitation.

GNOD – Chapel Perilous

The album is sequenced like a pulverising futuristic space-rock version of Reign In Blood: bookended by overbearing monolithic structures that initially cast shadows over the relatively hard-to-penetrate middle section. It’s great to finally hear ‘Donovan’s Daughters’ in a home setting. While it still slaps hard - and oh, sweet lord Jesus and all of your apostles, that drop - Raikes Parade’s masterful dub creates abyss-deep currents of echo and sky-scraping vapour trails of reverb.

Echoes and Dust reveals new Lay Llamas Thuban Dub EP Vol1

On Friday Lay Llamas are releasing a new EP called Thuban Dub EP Vol.1 and you can listen to this new two track EP in full now via Echoes and Dust.

Listen to Thuban Dub EP Vol.1 here: Echoes and Dust

The press release reads:

Lay Llamas – Thuban Dub EP Vol.1

On the 15 June, Italian-based collective Lay Llamas released their second album, the critically acclaimed Thuban – a travelogue powered by a pan-global fascination with rhythmic hypnosis and an unquenchable experimental mindset.

The album was quickly picked up by BBC Radio 6 Music and the music press alike as Thuban mapped out a unique terrain in which collaborations with the likes of Mark Stewart, Clinic, Goat and Julie’s Haircut contributed to the air of earthy vibrancy and fertile exploration.

Since the album’s release Nicola Giunta, the alchemist behind Lay Llamas decided to revisit tracks off the album, and the first ones to be released are the non single tracks Coffins on the Tree, a Black Brain on Our Way to Home which features on vocals Luca Giovanardi from fellow Italian band Julie’s Haircut, and the mighty Fight Fire with Fire which features the poignant spoken word from The Pop Group’s vocalist Mark Stewart.

Nicola said “These two tracks represent a step ahead, or better, inside the sound material which Thuban album is made of. The dub music concept itself is basically about the process of stripping down, filtering and modifying that lead the original track into a new dimension. It’s like bringing out new and precious objects from a well known cave. Objects sometimes hazy, not so in focus, but warm and rich of memories heritage anyway. Filtering through a burnt lens. Like the tale from a last night dream that you can’t remember in details but you need to bring out anyway. A different point of view.”

Lay Llamas latest album Thuban can be bought on Ltd LP and CD here: Bandcamp
