Gnod to play Qu Junctions night at the Arnolfini in Bristol

PLAYPEN

Friday 30 October 2015, 20:00 to 23:30
£10 / £8 concs

PLAYPEN is an evening of artfully engineered chaos taking over the auditorium: a lo-fi, hi-jinks meta-gig in which a plethora of quick fire, energising music and audio-visual interventions flow round the space in a blur of ever-shifting performance dynamics.

Artists getting caught in the three hours of crossfire include Pop Group frontman and legendary Bristol music provocateur Mark Stewart: US free improv/blues/punk solo guitar channeller Bill Orcutt: Young Echo no-fi dub upsetter Ossia: many-tentacled Manchester psych collective Gnod: Southend industrial shape-shifters Liberez: out-jazz miscreants The Evil Usses: protractor-defying art/rock upstarts The Jelas and analog noise merry-maker Phantom Chips. More names to follow.

Produced by Qu Junktions in collaboration with Arnolfini.

The Quietus makes Hey Colossus – Radio Static High it's Album of the week

The Lead Review: Noel Gardner On Hey Colossus' Radio Static High

Following on from the release of In Black And Gold earlier this year, Noel Gardener examines the group's continual moving further away from big riffs and sludge metal, into hypnotic melodies, creamy bliss, and giving breathing space to tangible human emotions.

If this review made a point of praising Hey Colossus for embarking on their own stylistic path, while so many try weaselishly to fit into moulds carved by others, it would run the risk of selling them short. This is because they're not a ragtag group of rootless nomads, but an affable – if ear-bleeding – British heavy rock band who, since forming in the early part of the millennium, have operated on principles derived from DIY punk culture, and have equally taken from and given back to a community of likeminded souls. Except if I were to hold up Radio Static High as a shining example of the greatness produced by the UK […] scene (the blank space is because it's never really been given a name that stuck, as far as I know), that too would feel slightly demeaning towards this marvellous album...

The Quietus review Hey Colossus at Liverpool Psych Fest

Saturday is undoubtedly about the groove

With a set that sounds like Jan Hammer having a nervous breakdown, Sun Araw's electronic meadering fails to hold interest so it's with a state of excitement that tQ makes its way to a rammed District Stage for an unforgettable set from Hey Colossus, a band going through an intense period of creativity and artistic highs. With the band about to release their second album of the year in the shape of Radio Static High, Hey Colossus are playing at the peak of their powers. 'Hot Grave' is especially pummelling tonight, its atonal strumming intro drawing huge cheers down the front but it's with 'Hop The Railings' that the band truly hit paydirt. A massive, swaggering beast that levels all before it, this is a moment to savour before fully surrendering to its relentless groove and letting the feet and hips take over. JM
