Echoes and Dust preveiw Cardiff Psych and Noise Fest

...and they say this about our very own Teeth of the Sea:

Sunday would be a nice day to relax after two days of vivid, kinetic music from all over the musical map (not to mention the real possibility that it requires retiring to a cave for at least a month of recuperation), but the Psych and Noise Fest organisers have shown no sympathy for such concerns by absolutely cramming Sunday’s bill full of goodness. Teeth of the Sea alone absolutely demand keeping some energy in reserve: the uncategorisable three-piece make mind-bending music that somehow combines electronica with the energy to level any given club, the most rapturous trumpet sounds around, and heroic guitar action to majestic effect; and they’ll be arriving in Cardiff not long after dropping what just might be their best album yet. They always play better before a crowd, and the prospect of them playing to a packed house in The Moon is mouthwatering. The only concern is that if they drop ‘Gladiators Ready’ from the new album then there may not be any survivors, and anyone who does walk away will never make anyone else believe the things they’ve witnessed.

Watch video for Gnoomes single 'Glasgow Coma State'

Your fave Russian band Gnoomes have just revealed the second single from their forthcoming album MU!, which is released on 31 May.  

The single is called 'Glasgow Coma State', and you can watch the psyched out video above

The video is made by Zachary J Rodell, a visual performance artist who uses analog light show techniques to create unique improvised light shows in his home city of San Francisco. He has helped light up bands like Terry Riley, Silver Apples, My bloody Valentine, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and many more.

Sacred DreamsJosefin Öhrn + The Liberation’s third album Sacred Dreams is the sort of thing any good mother would warn you about; trippy, dangerous and addictively good. Out now on Rocket Recordings, the London-based band’s new LP is full of fuzzy riffs and acid-drenched rock jams. Feel The Sun opens the record with some squelchy synths, a driving groove and Josefin’s whispered lyrics to form a track which gets the adrenaline flowing from the off. After the heady electronica of Honey Slumber, I Can Feel It merges I Feel Love style synths, loose guitar licks and rising vocals on a song which is going to sound like explosions going off in the brain when heard live. From here, Desire is deep and sexy pop music with a gothic heart, Hey Little Boy sounds like The Velvet Underground at their most languid, Baby Come On shows how rock music doesn’t have to be intricate to excite, Caramel Head is gorgeously hazy, while the dirge-like groove of Let It Come is worth the price of admission alone. Recalling the psychedelic majesty of fellow Londoners Toy, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation are a band tailor-made for these fucked-up times. 9.5/10.

MU! has been part recorded in the same old soviet radio station where the band recorded their last album Tschak! part in a professional studio and then part at home. This was to ensure the best capture of Gnoomes live assault. The results brim with a magnitude and sense of coherence that belies some of the environment it was created in. Fuzz-driven guitars shift in engulfing waves, resembling shoegaze giants at their most ferocious, whilst elsewhere layered vocals stack on top of one another, weaving between pristine melody and augmented discordance. Whilst the glacial electronics and coldwave tendencies that soaked much of their previous album may be more absent here, this record pulses with an electronic tinge that bubbles more subtly under the surface of immersive guitars.

Backseat Mafia reviews DJINN's debut album

They say:

Neither inherently good nor evil, the DJINN have been heralded in Arab culture since the Pre-Islamic period, located somewhere on a spiritual plane between humanity and the realm of deities. A mysterious force, their influence – essential between angel and demon – has subsequently extended to mythos, religious belief and folklore far and wide, from the malevolent spirits that originally haunted deserts and inspired poets to the archetypal Western genie in a bottle. Yet also, the DJINN’s name has been interpreted as meaning “beings that are concealed from the senses”. This makes the word a fitting moniker for an album which, despite being shrouded in mystery, manifests an unknowable yet intense spiritual force. Their first release – also the first ‘proper’ jazz record to see released on Rocket Recordings – is manifested as equal parts hidden and otherworldly influence.

Nojes Guiden reviews Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation's Sacred Dreams

They say:

Monotonin's suggestive power has always been central to  Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation , and it has become increasingly multifaceted and multicolored. They no longer need to force with muscle power and volume to achieve their powerful energy, and the new possibilities make full use of it. Instead of alarming, they whisper, as in hypnotic Only Lovers , who build their strength entirely on a lone silent guitar figure. 

The band's former psychedelic flirts are still traces of it, with instead of switching over to Interstellar Overdrive exits that they are now handled low-key and subtle for example in Let It Come . 

But it is with the new electronic dimensions that Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation celebrates the greatest triumphs. In Can Feel It is a pure Studio 54 disco hit, in the form of a respectfully updated variant of the krautdigital dance music that Giorgio Moroder achieved for Donna Summer 1977, and Desire is as smart a dance-friendly one . 

Some pure Velvet Underground moments are of course also here, shame would be it otherwise. Hey Little Boy is their own I'll Be Your Mirror , and the album's hardest moment Baby Come On takes the same bands Run Run Run on a ride with Spacemen 3. 

With such a comprehensive palette, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation has created its most powerful album so far. However, judging from where this breadth, dynamism and desire can bear, there is every reason to believe that it will already be surpassed by the band's next.
