New Noise reviews Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs' Viscerals

They say:

Pigs are evolving. Not the farmyard animals; they’re stuck in the mud. But the U.K. noise unit Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (known from here on out as Pigs x7), who, on their third album, have become a different beast.

Fans of the five-piece’s early fusions of fun and fury, never fear; they still kick and snarl and snort like they did in the very beginning, but Viscerals is 40 minutes of rock ‘n’ roll done right, a tsunami of noise that’s somehow laser targeted too, menace in technicolor. It’s just… more.


You can hear it all in opening track “Reducer,” a rolling boulder of piss, vinegar, and adrenaline. While relatively short and sweet by the band’s previous standards, it might still count as the heaviest punch they’ve ever landed...

They say:

The Newcastle heavy metal band deal with the big questions of life, God and death with ‘therapy through noise’ – while shirtless

When three future members of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs first started jamming as teenagers in leafy Richmond in North Yorkshire, the locals became curious about the strange sludge and doom metal jams emanating from the church hall in the early hours. One night, the trio had a visit.

“Everyone suddenly stopped playing,” chuckles singer Matt Baty, who was the drummer in those days. “I looked round and there were two coppers standing in the room. We’d been making full-on noise and they must have come to check out if anything untoward was going on, and they found us.”

Thankfully, the local plod didn’t arrest them. “When they left they told us, ‘Keep on rocking,’” grins guitarist Sam Grant. “Which we have.”


Almost 15 years later, after word-of-mouth buzz and BBC 6 Music support, the now five-piece were the festival hit of last summer, playing a hypnotic mix of Black Sabbath-style “precious metal” and Jane’s Addiction with the repetition-based outsider rock of Can, Hawkwind and Sunn O))). Pigs x7’s tour is on hold due to coronavirus, but see them when they come back around in November – gigs tend to be incendiary, hard-rocking but awesomely entertaining affairs, with audience members wearing pig masks or clambering on stage and Baty, stripped to his shorts, howling cathartically...

Let's face it, you don't need this column to tell you how swilltastic Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs' third long-player is. There'll be 1000-word write-ups elsewhere now the rest of the music press has cottoned on to the idea that this is no mere joke band with a sillybilly name, but the real deal playing an unusually warm-hearted and feel-good brand of doomy stoner psych. The basic headlines are these. Viscerals includes yet more - fairly subtle - musical progressions serving to expand the piggy palette further. For opener 'Reducer' the spotlight is on the cosmic lead guitar licks. 'New Body' grinds along antisocially like Swans or perhaps some kind of half-speed Jesus Lizard number. There's a weird almost dubsteppy intermission with some spoken-word vocals involving an extended gastronomic metaphor. There's maybe a thrash influence rearing its head elsewhere and some accessible growl-along choruses here and there. The crucial thing, however, is that the riffs are still heavier than Ray Winstone after a slap-up black pudding breakfast. Riffs, hey? They're important aren't they? WE WILL FIGHT OFF THIS VIRUS WITH RIFFS.*
