More reviews of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs live at Supersonic and Deershed Festivals

The Quietus review of Supersonic:

After Dalek's basstastic avant-rap rumblings complete with an invitation for Donald Trump to "suck my entire dick", it's time for Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs to once more resurrect and remould The Spirit Of Sabbath with riff after riff after mother-effing riff. Each to their own, but it's bit of a shame that the merry moshers at the front aren't concentrating more on half-naked singer Matthew Baty's excellent stagecraft as he stomps and slinks around with bombastic authority. Baty makes a moving speech about having been in this very room during the festival's closing night back in 2018, headlined by Shirley Collins, and how he wept through the entirety of the folk legend's set. He is honoured to be performing in the same spot. But rock is what Pigs came here to do, and soon the riffs are flying out once more, assisted in the final leg by Gordon from Terminal Cheesecake.

Live Forever  review of Deershed:

It wasn’t the weather but ill health that had forced Dublin post-rock mavens Fontaines D.C to withdraw, but cometh the hour, cometh Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs who, accompanied by another monsoon, rip into a noise wall assembled from their particular corner of Sabbath/Hawkwind/Stoner/Doom metal. Singer Matt Batty enters dressed in a cape, making you wonder whether he’s taking this thing a bit too seriously, but the show is headliner theatre from minute one, the band leaving no downtuned chord unbludgeoned in what is a jaw dropping spectacle of raw power.

The National Student say some Words about Julie's Haircut's new single

They say:

Julie’s Haircut – Until The Lights Go Out
Veterans of spaced-out rock from northern Italy, Julie’s Haircut has released a new single in the form of ‘Until The Lights Go Out’. Right from the off, the track exudes a spookiness reminiscent of garage rock stalwarts, the Oh Sees but also nods to the originators of the genre The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Its escalating organ and rapid drumming match the vocals’ repeated insistence to “dance to the thunderstorm”.

Miss Stacia dances with Bonnacons of Doom at Kozfest

Here are some pics of Miss Stacia, the legendary dancer in Hawkwind performing with Bonnacons of Doom at Kozfest on this last weekend.

This apparently is the first time Stacia has danced with a psych rock band in over 40 years, since she last danced with the mighty Hawkwind.

Fringe Review say some words about Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs live at Latitude

They say:

I seem to be a little late to the party with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs. The first I heard of them was a video I didn’t ask for on The Internets about six months ago, which I watched with what I assumed was meant to be horror, but slowly realised I was supposed to be taking seriously. It was both awful and wonderful at the same time, so when I saw they were here I decided to see if they’d force me off that fence of indecision.

They powerfully pushed me off, and I gaily ran so far into the yes field that I can no longer see that stupid metaphorical fence. I simply didn’t understand. But now I know better.

“I think these guys might be quite loud,” the sweet guy says to his cherubic boy, about seven or eight years old, as the apocalyptic-tinged sound check begins. “Is that alright?” “It’s fine daddy!” The boy insists sweetly. Because this is Latitude there are large numbers of middle-class children around. They look like they’d know what to expect at a vegan dinner party, and probably have complex views on tapenade...

Get into This makes Julie's Haircut one of their SIngles of the week

They say:

Julie’s Haircut: Until The Lights Go Out

Italian Psych Rock outfit, Julie’s Haircut, are back for their second album, In The Silence Electric, releasing their first single, Until The Lights Go Out.

It’s a perfect introduction to their forthcoming album, with an organ drone and a heavy drum beat providing the basis for the song.

It winds its way through each verse, lifting in each chorus, with an almighty and chaotic power, before finally it becomes a fuzzy and almost unrecognisable noise of guitars, complementing the visuals provided in their music video.

This one is definitely getting saved into many of our Spotify playlists that’s for sure.

PETBRICK are a Supernormal 'Band to watch' according to Astral Noize

They say:

What happens when you stick Big Lad/Death Pedals/Johnny Broke’s Wayne Adams in a room with metal legend Iggor Cavalera and ask them to create something primal? The answer is Petbrick, a psych-noise outfit who’ve already played with the likes of Full Of Hell and The Body and at alt-metal mecca Roadburn despite a relatively short lifespan thus far. The duo’s live show is a transcendent experience, and with them having recently announced their debut full-length I, due in late October, their set at Supernormal will be an exciting chance to see some new material and catch them before the venues inevitably start to increase in size...

Get into This say some words about Supersonic Festival

They say:

...The last band of the weekend for us will be Pigs x7. There’s been a change of venue, for reasons we don’t understand, but without any competition from any other stage we know this will be rammed, so we head over early.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs were a fine band to close out the weekend. Matt Baty seems to have grown in confidence since the first time we saw the band a couple of years ago. It feels like a full on glam rock out, with songs long enough to let them develop themes and stories.

There is no band quite like Pigs x 7, but then again, the same could have been said about pretty much every other band we saw this weekend...

Artsdesk reviews Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs at Supersonic Festival

They say:

The last band to hit the stage on Sunday was the mighty Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs and their lively stoner rock. It proved to be a fine show and an excellent crowning to fine weekend. Vocalist Matt Baty appeared in a glittery hoody and football shorts and proceeded to practice his infamous metal yoga as the band cranked up the volume and laid waste to “GNT”, “Shockmaster” and “A66” from last year’s King of Cowards album. “Sweet Relief” from Feed the Rats followed and the mosh pit went nuts. “Gloamer” may have been played at a slower tempo but that didn’t calm anyone. Indeed, by the time the band finally called time on their show, a stage diving Baty had been passed around over the heads of about half of those present, as the room became one with the driving groove, moshing crowd, heat, sweat and dry ice – and that’s the way to finish a real rock’n’roll show.

Julie's Haircut reveal first single from new forthcoming album 'In The Silence Electric'

Italian psychonauts Julie's Haircut return with their second album for Rocket called 'In The Silence Electric'. The album is released on 4 October and you can watch the video for first single to be taken from the album 'Until The lights Go Out' above.

See what Echoes & Dust say about the track here: Echoes and Dust

-

Until The Lights Go Out’ leads with a driving deep-end organ drone and a mantric intensity that Stereolab would have embraced, the track expands into a righteous ‘CAN’ like fury and incandescent splendour like the menacing dream-state, damaged psychic assault of GNOD.

In The Silence Electric’, is the latest record from a band with a long history of sonic otherworldliness, it is notable for its deft balance between hypnotic radiance and extrasensory intensity, between beatific calm and palpable anger. Yet it’s also a record which has arrived through a strange process of osmosis from a band confident enough to let subconscious and metaphysical aspects steer them in the appropriate directions.

In The Silence Electric is available on CD and three different Ltd Vinyl versions.
You can preorder the wonderful artwork sleeve by artist Annegret Soltau as special 'White/Clear colour-in-colour vinyl' version from the Rocket Bandcamp via the link below. There is also an 'indie shop' exclusive on 'Pink vinyl' and another ltd shop version on 'Green vinyl.

Revolver Mag makes PETBRICK one of its tracks of the week

They say:

Petbrick - "Horse"
Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy) may have jokingly referred to his new project Petbrick as an outlet for making "horrible noise," but the industrial swell and dystopian zest of their horrifying debut track "Horse" ticks off all the boxes for how to make something ugly sound so right. Anxious, driving drums and challenging segments of haunting squeals are more catchy than they have any right to be, and the finished product is a grand entry into modern industrial metal's oeuvre.

PETBRICK - the duo comprising Wayne Adams (Big Lad/Death Pedals/Johnny Broke) and Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulwax/Mixhell), are releasing their debut album 'I' via Rocket on 25 October and you can listen to the banging first track 'Horse' above

See what The Quietus say about the track here: The Quietus

And from your local record shops there are two ltd edition versions available – a 'Black & Clear, 50/50 split' version and a 'Skinned' colour version.

And for USA and Canadian fans, the PETBRICK album is being released there on the great Closed Casket Activities label.

---

Electronic experimentation, hardcore attitude, dystopian dread and in-the-red dementia collide and collude to form a uniquely invigorating assault that mixes the intensity of Ministry and the synapse-shredding mischief of Aphex Twin yet lodged firmly in the here and now.

'I' is packed with guest vocalists - from the full-throttle intensity of Full Of Hell’s Dylan Walker to Integrity’s legendary vocal exorcist Dwid Hellion. From the exhilarating melodic counterpoint of Mixhell's Laima Leyton and the unique stream-of-consciousness lunacy from Warmduscher’s Mutado Pintado.

The duo are taking the PETBRICK noise around the country and can be seen playing at:

02 Aug / FR / Fort de Bertheaume, Plougonvelin / Visions Festival

03 Aug / UK / Oxfordshire / Supernormal Festival

Get into This reviews Teeth of the Sea and Gum Takes Tooth at Deeper Cuts Festival

They say:

Teeth of the Sea, meanwhile, prove a big draw in Phase One. It’s not hard to see why.

Having released Wraith earlier this year through Rocket Recordings (label founder Chris Reeder spins records later on) the band have now amassed a serious arsenal of heavyweight tracks.

It’s intriguing to see how they pull off such dense, meticulous and wide-ranging sonics now that they operate as a trio – that they do it so well is quite the achievement. Songs bristle with grizzly electronics, thumping percussion and Jimmy Martin‘s killer riffs.

They’re cinematic but also a juggernaut of grooves which finds the dancefloor filling with a serious amount of heads bobbing to their widescreen death disco.

They close with their trademark death disco Responder – all 15 minutes of relentless, strident power closing with Sam Barton’s wall of trumpet squalls. It’s triumphant.

With the midnight hour passed fellow Rocket label heads Gum Takes Tooth hit the Phase One stage with a brutal assault of rhythmic punishment.

Relentless hardly covers it, and it’s exactly the kind of music fit to finish off the night – hyper-kinetic thuds and blinding electronic dissonance...

FREQ reviews GNOD and Bonnacons of Doom at Astral Festival

They say:

Back to SWX for the insane sight of Bonnacons Of Doom; about half-a-dozen people on stage wearing shining disc masks that make them look like some sort of astral version of The Residents. Fronted by a cape-wearing woman coming on like a high priestess, she wails over the top of a tribal post-metal sludge fest with guitars that sear and scorch through the dramatic light show. Her voice has real power and cuts through the righteous maelstrom like a knife through butter. The glinting masks behind her make the whole scene appear like some post-nuclear metal band that had survived disaster and were just waiting for Mad Max to stride through the bar-room door. Crazy stuff.

-

We escape back to the relative cool of SWX, but the upheaval that Gnod are causing on stage is anything but chilled. The band seems to be travelling on a trajectory that makes the sound angrier and louder and more ferocious each time we see them. Gone are the experimental jaunts and japes from ten years ago, and now they are a monolithic behemoth, seemingly taking up where Godflesh left off, but with none of the vulnerability and far more firepower. The third twin drummer attack of the day with Jesse Webb once again claiming a drum-stool, this is by far the most devastating.

The brutality of the group, caught in the ire of Paddy Shine‘s vocals and reflected in the shrieking of the two guitars which seem to be set on stun, even when at rest, is matched by an excoriating light show; all bright white and epilepsy-inducing shudders. The lights conspire to fabricate imaginary portals to Heaven along which the group are only too happy to escort us, and these moments of transcendence where the entire band lock in as one are perhaps the real moments of the set. It is hypnotic and relentless, the volume eye-bleeding, but coupled with some real clarity — although the guitars behave like some sort of torture victims desperate to wrest themselves from the players.

Twisted Soul say some words about PAISIEL

They say:

Released initially on cassette via Lovers & Lollypops, Paisiel‘s eponymous debut LP has now been issued on vinyl by Rocket Recordings.

Across the three-track recording, the duo of Portuguese drummer João Pais Filipe and German sax player Julius Gabriel roams freely between the repetition of krautrock, techno, jazz, experimental music and more.

The re-release of Paisiel follows on from João Pais Filipe’s collaboration last year with fellow drummer/percussionist Valentina Magaletti (Tomaga / Vanishing Twin) on the album CZN.

This is an brilliant album! Very unique stuff with so many twists and turns, throughout the whole release.

Check out the album below and if you want to grab the stunning limited edition transparent deep blue vinyl, head here – but hurry, as there’s only a few left!

Get into This interviews Teeth of the Sea's Sam Barton

Ahead of this weekends Deeper Cuts Festival in Liverpool (tickets here: Deeper Cuts) Get into This asks Sam Barton from Teeth of the Sea some questions, it reads:

With Teeth of the Sea set to headline Deeper Cuts Festival Getintothis’ Rick Leach chats to Sam Barton about the immediacy of performing live, getting things just right and being undefinable.

It’s a hot afternoon in early July as I phone Teeth of the Sea’s Sam Barton.

The sun is shining, there’s scarcely a breath of wind and a clear unbroken blue sky lies overhead.

All the windows are open and there’s a fat, lazy bee wandering from flower to flower outside. It’s rather too warm to be doing anything.

Our dog is fast asleep on the floor, exhausted by the heat and having been lulled into a dreamstate by my repeat playing of Teeth of the Sea’s most recent album, 2019’s astonishing Wraith earlier on.

I’ve got the Wimbledon tennis tournament on the television in the background on mute and the incongruity of chatting about Teeth of the Sea’s music which has been described as ‘dystopian,’ ‘science fiction’, ‘dark imaginary Bladerunner-esque soundtracks’ on a typical balmy English summer day is striking at say the least...

New Music Social say some words about Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation

It says:

Since I started this blog in March 2019, I’ve vigorously used social media to promote the content. The aim has been to say nice things about people that make good music, and probably the most satisfying part of doing this comes when the artist acknowledges the post. The most appreciative people are without doubt all those associated with Rocket Recordings, which only makes me like them even more. Josefin Ohrn and the Liberation are part of the Rocket Recordings roster, originally from Sweden but now based in London, they make damn fine music, and from my interactions with them on social media they seem like very nice people too.

As is often the case with me, my first exposure to the band was via their latest album ‘Sacred Dreams’. Having been suitable impressed by what I heard, I was encouraged to steadily work my way through their back catalogue, which has been an enjoyable experience that I’d thoroughly recommend.

Latest album ‘Sacred Dreams’ was released in April this year, and kicks off with the track that I first heard of theirs Feel the Sun, a lovely bit of psychedelic pop. The album twists and turns through a variety of genres - from the Goldfrapp like electronica of I Can Feel It and Desire to Velvets style 60s pop like Hey Little Boy  and ‘Caramel Head’ to the T-Rex glam of Baby Come On and the Suicide-esque Whatever You Want....
