The Utopia Strong's remix of Snapped Ankles makes The Quietus's 'Tracks of the Month'

They say:

Snapped Ankles - 'Rechargeable' (Utopia Strong Remix)

This utterly ridiculous remix is like putting your head in one of those multi-wired egg slicing contraptions and then putting all of the bloody slabs back in the wrong order. Literally head-wrecking stuff.

PETBRICK Under the influence with Echoes and Dust

They say:

On October 25th, Petbrick released their debut album I via Rocket Recordings/Closed Casket Activities. The album is made up of ten tracks and on a few of those tracks, you’ll find guest vocals provided by Dylan Walker (Full of Hell), Dwid Hellion (Integrity), Laima Leyton (Mixhell) and Mutado Pintado (Warmduscher), who also has an album coming out tomorrow (Nov 1st). Thoughts on the album can be summed up quite nicely and succinctly using a quote from one of our very own writers, Chris Ball, who recently reviewed I, “when you need a good invigorating shower of filth and fury then I very much hits the spot.”

We caught up with the duo and asked them to pick three albums that have influenced them and their music. Wayne Adams answered the question. His picks are below...

Backseat Mafia 9/10 review of Julie's Haircut's In The Silence Electric

They say:

In The Silence Electric is the latest LP from Italy’s Julie’s Haircut, recently released on Rocket Recordings. The band with a quarter of a century history are notable for their deft balance between hypnotic radiance and otherworldly intensity. The artwork comes from German avant-garde feminist Annegret Soltau and its striking aura works perfectly alongside the transcendent album.

When talking about the record and the evocative artwork, Luca states that “even when we write about very dreamlike situations, or metaphors, we always address very real, concrete aspects and problems of our life. There is a lot of the classic dualism between sex and death on this record. Sometimes it’s more dark and gritty, sometimes it’s more elevating.” He further add that “there’s a theme springing from the title of the record and the photos of Annegret Soltau that deliver some sense of helplessness, suffocation, difficulty in communication”.

Opening with ‘Anticipation of the Night’ which proves evocative from the offset with its twinkle opening and swooning vocal style. The juxtaposition of competing styles is something they have learnt to pull off to perfection. Moving to ‘Emerald Kiss’ we have more of their traditional psych noise with reverberating layers that dance playfully around the edges. The motorik beat and pulsating bass line add an air of menace to keep things nice and dark. ‘Until the Lights Go Out’ continues with this intense air but adds a pacey countenance to the mix, creating an all together intoxicating effect that takes the breathe...

Buzz gives PETBRICK a 5 star live review

They say:

PETBRICK / THE DEATH OF MONEY | LIVE REVIEW
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, Fri 1 Nov

There’s a special vibe to tonight’s gig, in the intimate surroundings of the downstairs bar at Clwb Ifor Bach. A smattering of people in the know have assembled to watch Wayne Adams from Big Lad and Iggor Cavalera from Sepultura, in their ultraviolent noise project Petbrick. It’s not for everyone, but the chance to witness one of metal’s greatest and most influential drummers smash his kit apart less than two metres away from me is a chance I – and the people assembled here – are not going to pass up...

Now I fully admit to fanboying out a bit here, as Iggor is a bit of a hero of mine. The guy has played on several of my most influential albums and continues to push boundaries in the drum department. Petbrick, his latest project, combines live drums with Wayne’s sampler/keyboard/computer combo, the result sounding like early 90s Ministry or early Skinny Puppy. There’s not much in the way of vocals – any that are on the album are in sampled form here, and Adams himself will occasionally have a snarl at the mic – but that’s OK, as the focus is purely on the noise element. Cavalera effortlessly slams his way through breakbeats, blastbeats, tribal beats and everything in between, while Adams rocks back and forth at his workstation like a psychotic Roddy Bottum...
