It’s the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…today, and the first entry for 2018, Velvet Sheep is aptly pleased to welcome Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs (or Pigs x7 for ease) for their Lucky 7, it’s a proper farmyard / Orwellian dust up, and we’re happier than pigs in excrement that this most exciting of doom-laden psych noise punks have joined us with some outstanding and edifying choices, not least Alice Coltrane, whose “Journey In Satchidananda” first came on my radar via an interview I did with Mudhoney’s Mark Arm for the Quietus. And incidentally Pigs x7 are playing a Quietus benefit gig at the Lexington on Friday 19 Jan, so you check out the Newcastle noiseniks tear it up under the veil of pagan mid winter darkness imminently. But here’s a picture of them earlier, at another, unnamed drinking establishment.

Pigs x7’s album “Feed The Rats” came out this time last year on the stellar Rocket Recordings, and featured highly on a few notable end of year lists. Their first ever gig had been supporting Goat on only their second live show, and since that the five piece have been relentlessly taking their neck-wrecking cathartic chaos on the road, playing with the likes of The Cosmic Dead and Luminous Bodies. Part Monster Magnet, Part Chimp (geddit) they make wearing ear plugs for mbv and Dinosaur Jr seem like wrapping yourself in cotton wool, but what did lead screamer Matt Baty (who also runs record label Box Recordings) and guitarist Adam Ian Sykes choose as songs they dig? What is at the root of their “Psychopomp”?

Cardinal Fuzz to release solo album by Anthroprophh/Gnod drummer Jessie Web

 
For the last couple of years Anthroprophh and Gnod drummer Jessie Web has been crafting a solo album under the guise of The Final Age.

The album is coming out Cardinal Fuzz have they have just shared the first rack from the album (which features Anthroprophh's Paul Allen on Guitar) above.

Hey Colossus and Gnod in Bandcamp's 'Ten British Bands That Bring The Noise Rock'

They say:

Hey Colossus
Hey Colossus have been knocking around since the early 2000s with much of their early material being so loud and lacking in compromise that some critics might go as far as to call it utterly unlistenable. 2015 marked a bold new phase for the band with the release of two albums, In Black & Gold and Radio Static High, when the group began toying with cleaner vocals and production techniques as well as honing their songcraft. Even better is 2017’s The Guillotine on which the powerful, interlocking riffs of the band’s three guitarists provide the perfect complement to wry lyrics about the depressing state of the nation.

Gnod
The Salford-based GNOD are one of those commendably confusing acts who choose to change sonic style with each successive record. In total contrast to 2015’s triple-vinyl space-jazz opus Infinity Machines was the devastating grind of the following year’s The Mirror. Inspired by the ominously reactionary direction of British politics, as well certain personal issues on which the band members refused to elaborate in interviews, The Mirror features just three songs of Swans-like intensity and bleakness, the final track being drawn out to over 18 punishing minutes.

Gum Takes Tooth reveal they are in the studio recording an album for Rocket

Ahead of Gum Takes Tooth first London show in a long time this Saturday – where they play the Lexington as part of The Quietus fundraising show (with support from ex Teeth of the Sea 'Mighty Lord Deathman' and the great 'Lower Slaughter'). The band have revealed to the Quietus that they are in the studio recording their third album and we at are proud to reveal that it is going to be coming out on Rocket later this year.
