The press release reads:

“Being from Italy and doing what we do - we are outsiders” reckons Luca Giovanardi, a founder member of Julie’s Haircut, whose always incendiary yet increasingly outlandish sound has found itself with few parallels in their homeland since their inception towards the end of the last century. Yet in following their own singular pathway, the band have arrived at the deep-end approach to sonic innovation audible on their debut release for Rocket Recordings, ‘Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin’, which finds them at a plateau of small-hours elucidation and revelation that may summon the spectres of the wayward squall of Mercury Rev, the shamanic allure of Dead Skeletons or the wild soundscapes of Amon Düül II to some, yet essentially sounds like no-one but themselves. 

Inspired by the methods of Can and Miles Davis, the band follow intuitive processes to transcend notions of classicism, genre and contemporary reference, somewhere in motion along the pathways of the consciousness-expanding psychedelic continuum without paying lip-service to its well-worn signifiers. The result is a record built on trance-like repetition that builds to mantric intensity to summon atmospheric plateaus redolent of the psychic and surreal transgressions of its title - a double-helix tribute to both Frank Zappa and Kenneth Anger. 

As Luca elaborates, "For me, if anything, psychedelic music has always been about adventure and loss of any safety net". Rest assured, 'Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin' offers no such security at all.

Get into this reviews Goat, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation etc at the Albert Hall

It reads:

Goat headlined an all-dayer at Manchester’s Albert Hall, Getintothis’ Michael Hovercraft and friends took a trip to the next dimension.

It began before that night in late October. In fact it had probably been going down for more than a decade now.

The psychosis they’d been feeling was just an extension of what seemed like forever but Big Rob’s tales about sitting up in his spare room road-testing his new Electrohome Signature Vinyl record player by repeatedly playing Neil Young‘s On The Beach from 2am until 7.45am while hoovering up half of the North End’s class As perfectly suited the day’s pre-amble to Manchester. Big Rob was on fine form and his stories about hallucinating deep into Saturday morning while fantasising about quitting the 9-5 office game and becoming a heavy-weight boxing champion may have sounded fantastical in the extreme yet they were also characteristic about what lay ahead and where they were all at. Who knows, such was his substance resistance he probably could take down half the heavyweight division. And still have something left for later...

The Arts Desk reviews Kuro

It reads:

Kuro is the brainchild and debut album of classically-trained violionist Agathe Max and bass-playing noisenik Gareth Turner, he of wigged-out psychedelicists Anthroprophh. If this seems an unlikely partnership, a shared love of “the drone” is where their sonic worlds collide, and from this collision has come a spaced-out opus of quite uncommon beauty.

Drawing on a sonic pallet that takes in the repetitive minimalism of Steve Reich, the drone of Sunn O))) and Ulver’s Terrestrials collaboration and dashes of Alice Coltrane’s trippy meditations, Kuro avoids easy pigeonholing. Its melancholy but rich tones, however, demand complete immersion, since this is one of those rare albums that requires the listener to sit down and pay full attention throughout.

The sparse “Arashi” draws you slowly into Kuro’s world with a long and sombre drone that builds and falls away through a North African flavoured soundscape, while the cinematic “The Hierophant” has Agathe Max’s violin floating high above Turner’s deep bowed bass throb before distilling into a minimalist repetitive groove with strange, looped sounds. “Song for the Mysticeti” eventually brings the album to a close with an Orb-flavoured spaced-out exploration into the trippy outerworlds, but it's in the monumental, 20-minute “Ishtar” where Kuro really shine the brightest on their debut outing. Mutating from a drawn-out organic drone that slowly builds and twists to take in spaced out samples and loops, Max’s violin soars and cuts in and out of Turner’s jazzy bass, as it builds and falls away. It's a beautiful sound sculpture of rich Eastern textures that is trippy and strange but also subtle and melodic.

Kuro’s debut album is in turns dark and sombre, beautiful and strange, but it is defiantly experimental. Nevertheless it exudes a warmth and richness throughout that makes it a totally engaging trip.

With visuals from Innerstrings, co- founders of Lewes Psychedelic festival and creator in part of what makes Liverpool Psych Fest look stunning, this promises to be the start of a brand new movement for Folkestone.

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation Mirage (Rocket)
With their band name a tribute to a passage from The Tibetan Book of the Dead, that root text for Sixties lysergic exploration, you’d be right in assuming that female-fronted Swedish band Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation would be bathed in psychedelia. While they like a good blast of shoe-gazey noisiness, as on songs such as “Looking for You”, of equal importance is a precise Motorik rhythm section that underpins everything, and an innate ability to construct a catchy song. “Sister Green Eyes”, meanwhile, has a Velvet Underground moodiness about it. For all the hiss, squall and mantric pacing, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation, like Lou Reed and John Cale’s seminal outfit, are actually an accomplished pop band in disguise, as may become clearer if their career blossoms.
