RL – yeah we all good thanks. the album has been out in the wild for a month or so now so we are busy chasing it up and down the country in our VW.
Two albums in one year is pretty prolific in itself. Two albums of completely different styles is something else. Tell me about how this all came about?

TEETH OF THE SEA
HEAD OF STEAM, NEWCASTLE (14.11.15)
Despite being immersed in their new Highly Deadly Black Tarantula album for a few weeks now, and despite having seen Teeth of The Sea play blinding gigs in the past, tonight’s set was a revelation. Nobody is doing what they’re doing right now: their mix of electronic flourishes and staccato beats, intense churning industrial bottom end, sheets of metal guitar and Miles Davis/Morricone trumpet peals shouldn’t work but does, brilliantly. It’s always a joy to see a band hit their stride like this, the disparate styles of their previous albums coming together perfectly, and Mat Colgate’s jubilant air punches suggested they were feeling it too. This is post-everything music, a psych-prog-noise explosion that is in your face and groovy as hell all at once (there were bearded doomheads dancing at this gig who I’d long assumed had a clause in their contract with Satan forbidding such nonsense, such is the infectiousness of TOTS’ rhythms). Something about the way Sam’s trumpet rises above the maelstrom hits you right in the feels and made me wonder if that’s their secret ingredient, such an unusual sound in this kind of context and all the lovelier for it. A typical – and typically frustrating – early curfew (for DJs or somesuch) robbed us of what would surely have been a magnificent encore with Responder but you’d have to be a lunatic to feel short-changed after what preceded it. A truly special night and everybody there knew it.

Horse Dance
Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation
This sultry siren and her grand troupe of experimentalists hailing from Stockholm cleverly blend Krautrock, experimental synth pop, 1960s garage psychedelia, trip hop cinematic tension, and stoner rock leanings. Josefin and company’s lineup is Josefin Öhrn (vocals, guitar, synths), Fredrik Joelson (guitars, vocals), Christopher Cantillo (drums), Victor Hvidfeldt (bass, guitar, vocals), and Calle Olsson (synths, vocals). They spoiled us earlier in the year with the ‘Psychedelicatassen’ experience, the Diamond Waves EP, which served up mouth-watering appetisers like ‘Anything So Bright’ and ‘Free’, flowing with wonderful colours and flavours.
Following that recording, there's obvious opportunity to ask if we are currently experiencing a Psychedelic revival as witnessed in a spate of many bands in the last few years imprinting their own recognisable brands in the genre...

Oneida – Positions
With a work rate that puts many other bands to shame, krautrock psychonauts Oneida have developed a back catalogue which is full to the brim with excellent moments. This is all set to continue now with the release of their mini album Positions which, although only three tracks long, is a perfect antidote this side of Christmas to take you away from it all for a brief while.
Taking in two cover version of songs from This Heat and Chrome you may well feel a little short-changed but don’t let that put you off as in these songs are the essence of what makes this EP so great. Indeed, ‘All Data Lost’ may well be on your list of greatest tracks ever by the time it comes to its fiery end.
Opening with the post-punk squall of ‘SBQR’ whose bedraggled guitar throws you deep into the New York underground and the spirit of the original no wave scene from CBGB’s is resurrected, it’s also a complete red herring as to how the rest of the EP pans out. This is Oneida though, and a few surprises are always to be expected when approaching their music…

Capra Informis – Womb Of The Wild
There seems to be a bit of a cottage industry growing round Goat these days. Not content with being one of the most celebrated psych bands of recent years, they have also had a hand in the success of Hills (who may or may not be Goat depending on who you speak to) and now Capra Informis which is essentially the djembi player who felt he/she had a bit of downtime in their busy schedule to record some extra tracks on his/her own. As suits the mystique around the player to the extent that we cannot even be sure of the sex, the music that Capra Informis deliver is equally mysterious and ambiguous.
At only four tracks long and clocking in at the twenty minute mark there is a distinct lack of something building into a cohesive whole but as a primer EP it’s simply a revelation to hear another side of Goat. Where-as the mother group follow avenues of “world music” filled with caterwauling banshees, Capra Informis is much more measured and ambient. The roots of Goat are there, they are just taken down a different alley.
So whilst lacking in length, the deep psych on offer is rather good and follows a path set by mid-period Pink Floyd at times before veering off into Amon Duul territory. With a complete lack of structure about the four tracks, each set around a distinct pattern or rhythm, the music is heady stuff which requires some tuning in to turn on.
