Clash reviews Gnoomes – Ngan!

What would you do if you lived in the middle of nowhere? Sounds like a glib rhetorical question, but it isn’t. Think for a moment. What would you do all day if you lived in a concrete tower block in the long shadows of the Ural Mountains, some 700 miles East of Moscow. The view from your ice-cold window is a sub-arctic land, urbanised by necessity as a place of exile for Tsarist and Stalinist regimes.

This is Perm, a city whose name means ‘island’ or ‘faraway land’ depending on the etymological root. Whatever answers you came up with, if any, being in a band has got to be a decent option. Alex, Pavel and Dmitriy formed their band Gnoomes to stave off ‘the Russian madness” that can come home to roost in such an environment. When there’s fuck all to do outside, what better than to retreat into an inner expanse and make some serious, delirious, transportive sounds?

This is what shines through in debut album ‘NGAN!’ The lads have plundered the abyss and emerged with four tracks that are sweeping, cinematic soundscapes. The album is bookended by ‘Roadhouse’ and ‘My Son’, these 15-minute aural journeys are layered with steady, relentless drumming, soaring if not searching melodies, and a distinctive psychedelic sensibility.

Sandwiched in the middle is ‘Myriad’ – a hypnotic 4-minute droning dream-like ride, and the My Bloody Valentine-esque ‘Moognes’. Fans of Curve, Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Mogwai et al. should wholeheartedly approve.

They’ve only been together for 18 months, so fair to say there’s musical gold in them there Siberian hills. On the Gnoomes Bandcamp page the hashtags are Psychedelic, Krautrock and shoegaze, but they wanted to invent their own label – which is ‘stargaze’. In their own words: “stargaze is like a human state, when you’re lying on the grass with your friends, telling funny stories, and watching shooting stars.”

'Get into This' say some words about Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation new single 'Take me Beyond'

Getintothis’ Patrick Clarke continues his stalker-like obsession with Rocket Recordings, gets seedy in Seattle and surrenders to the hazy bombast in episode 53 of  his weekly introducing round-up.

It’s no secret how much I love Rocket Recordings. In fact my very first article for this website was about how much I love Rocket Recordings. If ever they’ve an artist eligible for a top 10 must-sees before a festival they’re the first on my list, if ever I can shoehorn them into this column, I will. I really love Rocket Recordings. I even bought a Rocket Recordings t-shirt at Psych Fest last year. I’m pretty sure they think I’m weird.


The stalking, however, shall continue unabated, especially when their output’s as formidable as new airing Take Me Beyond from Josefin Öhrn & The Liberation. A heady injection of transporting psych via Trans-Europe Express, it’s a circling, spinning four minutes backed with a heavenly lift that’s a sumptuous chink of light to counterpoint the inky, villainous intensity of their finest labelmates – and my other psych obsession right now – Hey Colossus.

"It's all well and good when we bang on about Hey Colossus being the nearest thing the UK has to inheritors of the crown of the Butthole Surfers, yet if their festival opening set on Friday in the Warehouse stage proved anything, it's that if they'd stop fucking around they could easily be the most vital noise rock outfit in the county; seriously, they could be headlining a festival like this. No doubt they'd tell me to fuck off were I to put it to them that if they'd just put down the bong… they could achieve a greater deal of relative success, and in fairness they probably should – why should I stifle their creativity by insisting they do something as mundane as to take it a bit more seriously?"

I wrote the above back in 2012 as part of tQ’s coverage of that years Supersonic festival in Birmingham, on the eve of the release of Hey Colossus’ then most accomplished record, the bizarrely titled Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo, and just after group had played to what was at the time, by their own admission, most likely their largest ever audience. It’s a statement that’s running through my brain repeatedly as I take an early morning bus ride across South London to meet three-fifths of the sextet at the home of drummer Rhys Llewellyn, before squeezing into a car with them to make the long-ish journey west to first Cardiff and then Bristol…

GNOOMES – NGAN!

This is one is hot off the press – not much is known about Gnoomes. Google, inevitably, will insist that you actually want to search for ‘gnomes’, but persistence leads you to Facebook and Twitter pages that are yet to take off. This needs to be put to rights.

Gnomes are vocalist/bassist Alex Pyankov, drummer Pavel Fedoseev and guitarist Dmitriy Konyushevich. They come from a place in Russia called Perm, which translates as ‘Faraway land’; the location of their recordings can easily be envisaged through their music – this album contains four tracks that make over 30 minutes of patient, dreamy ambient pop that ebbs and flows in and out of shoegaze...

On this, our third attempt at sullying the growing-good name of the cosmic-crush-collective known as Hey Colossus by shackling them with the “Band of the Week” designation, we’re bound to be repeating ourselves. Hey Colossus, on “Radio Static High” – their second, superlative full-length album released this year alone (on the ever-exploding Rocket Recordings), are doing nothing of the sort.

The art of musical bastardry is a delicate one. Mamuthones cover the Rolling Stones track 'Sympathy for the Devil' from Beggars Banquet and the question is, do they have something relevant to contribute to the song's legacy? Well, if you to cover a song that sits so prominently in the public consciousness, then make it your own, stamp some personality on it, lest it be seen as some kind of commercially advantageous gesture.

Having said that, there is a kind of symmetry about Mamuthones covering a song about the devil and his malevolent deeds, given the group are steeped in the Italian occult. They take their name from the death-masked pre-Christian processions in Sardinia over 2000 years ago, a tradition that is honoured in Sardinia to this day...
